Title: Setting up your scope
Post by: stonykill on December 26, 2015, 07:44:27 AM
I hear a lot, and get asked a lot about scope for the 880/901. I'll include a video which I have found the best and simplest explanation on the subject.

But 1st lets talk mounting rings for the Daisy's. Brief intermission before I go there. There is NOTHING wrong with the plastic receivers. The scope won't move on them. The trick is to NOT overtighten the mounts to the rails.

Ok, 1st before you even mount your rings, make sure the receiver screws are tight. If they are not tight the rail, which is on the bolt side of the receiver will move shot to shot, and all of your work will be for nothing.

Next is picking out the correct mounting rings. You want ings in which the bottom, which is on the receiver side, have a flat bottom. IF the bottom i rounded, your rings will not mount correctly.

Many air rifle and .22 rim fire scopes come with such rings. The UTG line of scopes do and are excellent on an 880 as is the Bushnell .22 scope from Wally World.

As for that "free" 4 x 15 scope that comes with most 880's. Don't waste your time on it.

Now for a moment, lets go back to tightening the rings onto the receiver. Look at the mounting clamp screw on the Bushnell scope. Here is how tight to make the rings on the receiver. Take an American quarter and insert it into the screw. Use that quarter to tighten the screw. THAT is all of the tightness you need. Any more than that you risk damaging the receiver. So if using an allen wrench on the UTG style mounts, hold the small end of the wrench when tightening. JUST like you would when tightening the ring tops to the scope. Light pressure is all that is needed. IF you dent anything, you are too tight.

As for the balance of setting up the scope, this video is simply the best and easiest to understand I have ever watched. Combine the info above, with what is learned on the video and you will repeatedly be putting the right pellet in the same hole over and over again with your 880 or 901. IF you o course practice good shooting form  ;)

So that notched ring at the back of the scope isn't a 'hi/lo' power adjustment, it's a locking ring on the secondary lens adjustment, to bring the reticle into perfect focus?
Interesting...

Not sure if this is the place but here goes...I have a 3X9 Simmons mounted on my Daisy 880. I rotated the scope 90 degrees. Now my Windage is at top dead center & Elevation is on the left side. Found this necessary because the turret (windage) caused a problem loading the rifle. Now I have "L" on top & "U" on the left. So am I correct in assuming "L" is now "U" & vise versa & moving in the direction of the arrow will give me the same results? Or is this wishful thinking.

Thanks

Tom, I've seen a couple of Bushnell 4x32's. One has the brand/model name "Banner", & the other one "Sportsman". Are any of these the one up top?

Thanks

Have a 3x9x32 on mine now. Think I'll put it back on the 243. Picked up two more 880's for my son's to unwrap in about 3 days ;). At that price I think I'll take 3. Can't beat Wally.

Thanks
