Title: Pulled the trigger on a Hatsan95 after months of looking around. What to expect?
Post by: OnlyHalfRight on November 25, 2015, 12:07:05 AM
I've put way too much thought into this. And it has taken me months to finally make my mind up.

I decided on a Hatsan 95 Vortex .22. For now the HW95 will wait and be a future gun. I see myself having 5-10  guns in my signature like some/most of you hahaha.

Other than cleaning the barrel i should be good to go out of the box? Should i wait on mounting the cheap scope that comes with it until after 500 shots or so?

Estimated delivery date Dec1-4. I don't think i'll make it. :o :o :o :o

If yours is anything like mine it will be a shooter right off the bat. All I did on mine was run some patches through the bore then headed to the range. A couple minor sight adjustments and it was shooting good groups immediately. Can't answer on the scope since I'm leaving mine with open sights. I'm finding that air guns are addictive. I bought my first break barrel gun about a month ago and now I have three! Let us know how you like it!

One more thing, if you're new to break barrel air guns I saw a tip on this site that was a huge help in cleaning the barrel. Tie a slip knot at the end of a length of fishing line and secure it around a patch. Use the hose on your vacuum cleaner and create a seal with your hand at the muzzle. Feed the line into the rear of the barrel and the suction will pull it through. Then just grab the line and pull the patch through. At first I thought I'd be able to feed the line through by hand but after about 10" it would not feed. I grabbed the vacuum and the line shot right through. I can't remember who posted that tip but thank you!

Mine is a .25 cal, not .22 and opinions will vary, but I spent a little and got a Hoppe's Bore snake for the barrel. You should only need to give it a quick cleaning every 1000 shots or so. Like pab1 said, they're nice rifles out of the box and it will smooth out more in 100 or so shots.
The scope that comes with it is a decent starter scope, get some Blue loctite for the scope mount screws. It keeps the screws from coming loose and if you decide to take it back off, they come loose pretty easy with a screwdriver. You shouldn't have any problems mounting it after maybe 150 shots,  the Mod 95's don't have a hard recoil. You also might keep an eye on the stock screws, sometimes they start to loosen up and the loctite is something you can use on those too.
You'll have to ask pab what pellets work good in his rifle, mine seem to like H&N and JSB but the .22 might be different. Can't think of anything else at the moment but this is always a great place to ask questions.

I bought some Crosman Premier HPs figuring I didn't want to "waste" more expensive pellets breaking the gun in. I've been very happy with their accuracy and performance on game. I'm sure I'll try other pellets in it eventually but right now I'm very happy with these.

I must be the only shooter that's had bad luck with the CP's...I got a tin to try in the new XS25 and my target looked like I was using a shotgun with buckshot...they just don't fit snug at all in the barrel and I had flyers everywhere but center, although that reminds me...
Manie, there are a few pellet brands out there that sell sampler packs that usually have between 5 or 6 different kinds of their pellets in them and run about $15. You might consider getting a couple and it's a great way to test pellets without buying a whole tin and finding out a certain kind doesn't shoot well.

Thanks, I have almost half a tin left of CPHP. I'll count them at some point. I'll def try a sampler to see what my rifle prefers..

This waiting game is killing me. I must exterminate all the rats :)

You could always get a .177 in several decent brands from Wallyworld for $100 or less to kill the time waiting and they will definitely kill rats, even the grey bushy tailed ones in the trees.

Someone posted a link in another thread to a Remington that was only like $73... I already have 5 but I still don't own a .177.....yet....

My 95 in .22 seems to like the CPHPs just fine. I've got JSB 15.89s on hand but haven't seen a need to use them yet--I use them in my XL1100 and Vantage. I don't wanna spoil her (the 95) with the more expensive pellets if she doesn't need 'em. ;) The Vantage is really the only rifle I own that doesn't like the Crosmans. Don't know why but they're all over the place in it.

Haven't tried the Crosman in the Fuel yet...also found a tin of the Polymags I totally forgot I had, which don't shoot in the Fuel, might be why I forgot about them...got 4 days off...time to do some testing...

my 2 new ones shot great right out of the box usually within 20 shots they settled down, i sighted them in open sighted first after i got them sighted in i mounted the cheap scope. the 2 new scopes i got arent that bad, however the rings are horrible

Finally got it.

This rifle is BEAUTIFUL. If i had to complain about something visually it would be the plastic sights...But ive seen post on Hunting Gate of people using them to get rabbits. So clearly theyre more than capable.

Going to clean the barrel in a second. Will mount after i feel it has calmed down a bit :)

2 rifles in 2 days, the obsession is born.

I'm glad you like it after months of looking. I love this stuff but love is like a habit. Some are good and some are otherwise.

Got impatient and did 50 quick shots till the smoking stopped.

Put the scope on and tried my luck. After 10 or so shots i felt the sights were on and went for a group

15 paces from where i was standing.Im not winning any matches any time soon, but im confident i will be at some point. Loving this rifle. If it werent raining id still be outside.

That's a nice group there! I bought some cleaning items to clean my .177 Quest and the .22 95 Vortex when it gets here. I cleaned the Quest and it all worked nice. I got an assortment of items from Walmart; one piece, .177 and higher cleaning rod, brass brushes for .177 and .22, some barrel conditioner/cleaner, bag of patches and the $12 Umarex cleaning kit. I only used the .177 mop from that kit so far. But I felt I was in good shape for when my Hatsan .22 arrived. Yesterday I ended up canceling my backorder for it at Midway and got a refurb from Airgun Pro Shop. While there I added their Hatsan Factory Bulletproof (tuning) service to the order so they'll clean it before I even get it. I keep reading how everyone says the gun shoots so well out of the box but I wanted to spend a little more just to make sure it shoots it's best for me because I know *I'M* the weak link in putting lead on target and I want to give myself every advantage I can. Reading your reaction to your 95 makes waiting on mine that much harder. ;) Where are the rats you're going after? What's your technique for getting them?

Steve, I'd love to hear how those Polymags work in your .25. Has anyone tried Polymags in the .22 yet?

My barrel was quite filthy.Took me several passes before getting it clean. I used a damp one with simple green when it was getting better, and then several more dry ones till i saw nothing.

I did fire a shot before cleaning it though :(. Im hoping that doenst have any long term effects.

I work with animals, so theres tons outside. We have traps inside but they seem to avoid them. I can get far more rats than the traps can get. But im running into issues. My flashlight scares them away. I plan on getting a red led flashlight to mount on my gun. Night vision setup would be best ,but im sure thats far more expensive than a 20 buck light.

Yeah, I saw some kind of green light that would let you shoot at night w/your daytime scope but I think it was in the $200 range, which is cheap for that kind of gear I think. I'd LOVE to go on a night rat hunt! That's what got me back into this; all those British PCP rat hunting videos on youtube.

I never tried the Polymags in my .25's.

I originally got them to try in the .22 Fuel and they shot lousy. Forgot even having them until I got the new XS25 from Flying Dragon and found them again getting a tin of H&N's out...in the XS, they shoot 1/2" groups at 30 yards. How well they'll work in the Mod 95 .22 I have no idea, the only thing I can tell you for sure is they're a 16gr pellet.
The only .22's I have are the XS25 and a Umarex Fuel and other than what the specs say for fps ratings, I don't know how they stack up to the Mod 95 actually shooting. Safest bet as always is find the guys on here that have them...JoeV is one of the good ones and I'm sure you've already read the threads with his chrony numbers and the pellets he used.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Congrats on the new gun/s.
Keep us posted.

I'm looking hard at the .177 model. Kinda want a scope for a new gun, but sounds like it's gotta be a pretty good one to withstand the spring recoil...
For me it's kinda come down to a comparison between the Hatsan 95 and the RWS 35 clones (Flying Dragon XS25 and Ruger Hawk series). I was thinking of the Gamo Silent Cat for a while... but I hear so many good things about Mike Mellick's FD guns (no scope), and the Hatsan 95 (with scope), that I've mostly given up on the Gamo.

Sounds like you're gonna get a great rifle and also not have to wonder when or if the Optima scope is going to hold up.
Was looking at one of the Striker refurbs when I was debating which .177 to buy and got the Webley Spector instead. The tactical stock looks a little goofy, but the rest of the rifle is a Hatsan Striker and $50 for a new Striker is an absolute steal.

Yeah, no scope included in a refurb so I'll be open sighting it for a while. I keep reading these 'got my Hatsan 95 .22' threads and know one day I'll be typing one of my own. Right now, I'm shooting vicariously though you guys, so keep the pics, videos and reports of your 95 Vortex .22's coming!

I just got the XS25  in .22 with Mike's full tune. Nope, no gas ram. Nope, no SAS, but as smooth as the rifle shoots, you don't need either. It also has a 2 stage adjustable trigger, but the way it was set up when I got it, there's no reason whatsoever to adjust anything. Plus you get Mike's lifetime warranty with the full tune package. Absolutely the best $215 I ever spent.

I shoot off hand usually in a sitting or kneeling position and shoot my spinners consistant 2 20 yards, granted i shoot alot every day rain or shine indoors or outside. the reason i shoot so much is 3 years ago i got into airgunning my first airifle was a benjamin xl1100 in 22 cal. i had a hard time getting consistant because i couldnt gert the hang of the artilery hold. now i got it and realize shot to shot hand placement follow through is important

Giles that's HILARIOUS!  ;D Thanks for the laugh.

When people post their groups. Is it off a rest or off hand?

I imagine (as a newbie to the forum, for whatever that's worth) that most groups that are posted are on a rest. They're trying to display how accurate the gun/pellet combo is after having sighted them in.

i dont use a rest because i dont do the artillery hold right and pellets look like a scatter gun lol
