Title: Commeta Lovers......Cometa Gas Ram? What Are Your Thoughts?
Post by: gene_sc on March 12, 2011, 06:02:13 PM
I have been working on a RWS-94 which has the same power plant that Cometa has been using for over 20 years. I have finished the barrel shroud and the stock has just been refinished by David.

I am working on the trigger group right now and was thinking about converting it over to a gas ram. With my initial measurments and data it looks to be feasable.

What are your thoughts.

Gene, I think it would be an awesome option, and I'd love to offer it to people if it is feasible! The RWS 94 works out to be the Cometa Fenix or the 400.

If memory serves, you were not thrilled with the trigger group? Are you making a substitution?

I'd personally love the option for a gas ram in the Cometa!

No Richard the triggers are good. Cometa released a batch of bad ones when they released the newer models two  years ago. Seems they have fixed the issue now. The conversion at this point will be moding the original trigger blocks. It would have to be a DIY mod. It looks to be very feasable and as soon as I can, I will update you and everyone here on the progress.

Modifcations to trigger block have been made. Now for the fitting process with piston and gas ram. So far this has been interesting. Stay tuned to see if it all works...:)

that would great, gene.   i've got 2 gas rams coming for the trail xl that i plan to try in some guns.   i have a .22 94 that shoots a very smooth 765 w/ cphp's and a solid 745 fps w/ FTT's.    i would love to have it shooting closer to 800 or 20 ftlbs.   it's probably the gun i shoot the most.   very easy to cock, accurate as heck, not too heavy (maybe 8 lbs w/ small scope), no cheapo plastic-feeling recoil......and get this.....you can usually find a m94 for around $150.  i have a m94 in .177 that averages 950 fps w/ cphp's and shoots just as smooth.  i gave another to one of my best friends and his averages 940 fps and his is VERY accurate (or maybe he's just a better shot).   i love these things so much that i got a new .22 fusion from rich lynch.  it's breaking in better now, but still disappoints on the power level.   it feels about a pound lighter than the .22 m94, but it shoots a tad slower than the 94.   the factory specs show it to shoot faster than the fenix 400 (same gun as rws m94) by 25 fps.   i asked rich to get a new spring and piston seal for the fusion.....because.....i KNOW there is a way to get 20-21 ftlbs out of these light-weight springers.  i searched all over for that discontinued E9870 macarri spring.  rich mentioned his .22 fusion that you did for him shot well over 800 fps and it's supposed to have this E9870 spring in it.   i use the .22 94 for hunting when i'm not using the disco.   i need a cometa that does 20 ftlbs or greater.    so, let me know how i can help.     - paul d self.   http://raneair.webs.com .

HEy that is great news. Like to see more folks trying this stuff. Options are getting limitless these days. Is there a link to his post?

Paul I am not going for a higher fps shooter but just for overall cocking and shooting smoothness. These rams have been pushing lead in the low 900 fps with 7.9 gn pellets. Rams were not designed to surpass a springs strength only to limit the recoil harshness and consistancy. The Uro Spring that JM was selling is no longer available. Don't know if any other spring is comaptible with the Cometa 400's or RWS 94's. Piston has sleeve inside to prevent cocking shoe from not touching the spring. I suppose you could take the sleeve out like many do on the Ruger Air Hawks and fit a larger diameter spring in there.
I will have the final numbers for you all once the gun is finished.

at this point i feel, for me anyway, the gas spring is the only option. You could open up a whole new world for me and others like me. I've been looking at many guns that I would like but they are limited by springs that are short lived and very fussy. Thanks Gene for venturing into a new project

i forgot to mention that i have one of those E9870 springs coming from argentina.  some fellow airgun patron saw my want ad for one and emailed me.   i have another idea from a friend for springs also.

Great place for gas rams but for most of our applications they are very short. The longest one is only about 8" long.

Thanks for sharing
