I pulled out my ATI Nova Liberty the other day and, for the first time since I was in the service, shot open sights to 25 yards. I surprised myself and did better than I anticipated. The Liberty's sights are decent, but certainly not very precise. The receiver and barrel band both look like they have 11mm rails so I'm thinking about pushing the envelope, getting better sights and shooting longer distances. What's a reasonably good distance? What's the furthest you've shot open sights? Any tips?

I have shot out to 100 yards with a Diana48 with success. I use Williams rear and Diana front hooded sight.

I shoot an Armada 22 using only Open Sights.
I don't know for sure but approximately 75 yards and it is hit or miss for me. (but those squirrels are tricky buggers, I think I hit them and they run off).
Approximately 20 to 50 yards... DEADLY !
I find using a Scope to be hard to locate the target and in turn I lose the shot, even though I am starting to think about one.
It is probably just me but I prefer the open sights.
Also thinking on a Flip Mount for a Scope !

shot a plastic bottle about 125m in salt water ( was a fluke )

Target or hunting?
I will shoot any distance on targets, but hunting must be close enough to ensure the kill.

I want to be a 6 inch paper plate at 100 with iron sights, but not sure my eyes will allow. 3 inch circle at 50 I can do, post and aperture "AR style" sights. The 3 inch adhesive targets are as wide as the front post at 50, I'm guessing a 6 inch target will be about as wide at 100 and that may be the best resolution I can get without going to a more precise sight design.
Now, if I could squeak out 3 inches at 100 with said sights, I'd be extremely pleased with my abilities, but not really holding my breath on that one.

Last attempt at 100.
Man I'm not a rock steady Hawkeye 20 year old anymore
With a bit of sight adjustment I managed to get good in the pellet tin lid.

Wow, I'm impressed! Are you able to adjust your sights for the pellet drop or are you picking a point above the target?

I sight in. Hold over and me don't seem to get along..lol. I mean how hard is it to click up or down?
Also I had to do some plastic surgery on the rear . Well pictures of that on on the device I ran over with the tractor. I'll take fresh ...
The shims keep the blade tight where you put it .it ain't pretty but affective and still adjustable as normal.
No more flip flopping around when I open or close the breach.😜

That's pretty impressive, beyond my current level of skill for certain.

A little add-on to my earlier post.
Just came in from some Plinking !
My next door neighbor likes to practice Golf and hit the balls in my direction. He claims he isn't hitting my way but I have a few laying around, free targets.
I decided to take a few shots at the Golf Balls with my Open sighted Armada, my hits at approximately 20-30 yds. is about 80% maybe a little better, I do like open sights and this Armada.
-
It depends on what I'm doing.
Hunting squirrels or rabbits, I'd feel comfortable out to 25 yards if that was what I was practicing. Targets would be fun at any range out to about 50 yards if the size of the target was appropriate.
With that said, both my pellet rifles are scoped; all of the BB guns are peep sights, so that's what I shoot.

careful with that... golfballs tend to shoot back. they are known to send pellets back at ya.
You'll put your eye out, kid.

Thanks, didn't think of anything like that happening.
I was just bouncing them along, wasn't thinking further.

Yeah I’ve done that a long time ago. Sent a .22 pellet right back at me into the garage from 30m. Seemed coming at me as fast as it was going, maybe a tad less. Never did that again. ;)
-
I shoot mostly with open sights. 50 yards or less.
-
With open sights I shoot to 40 meters, or less. I just don’t think I’ve really tried to shoot further than that. I’ve generally set my sights for 20-30 meters.
-
I love shooting open sights, usually off-hand at foam golf balls and pill bottles out to 30 yards. One memorable day, I took three shots at a 45y 1.5 inch spinner with a 1960 Blue Streak and Lyman peep and went 3/3 and put the gun away grinning ear to ear.

I've "re-thunk" the idea, I will collect the gold balls using my Brush Hog, then give them back ! LoL !

In my younger days I didn't think anything about making a 50 yard or even 75 yard shots with my .30-30 with open sights, now at 67 years old eyes, I have trouble with anything past 20 yards.

10 meters

I have seen this happen with a 22 PB also.

Lol! I learned that the hard way too. My .22 must have been tumbling during its return flight because it was whistling/buzzing something fierce. Sent me running for cover. But shooting plastic Wiffle golf balls is my favorite reactive target.

Anything goes on targets for fun, but 20-25 yards max on squirrels with the Williams rear peep sight on my 177 BAM B26. There is just something about that combination - it's my favorite rifle of late.
