Title: Another TX200 Pellet Thread
Post by: Elo76 on January 11, 2019, 10:02:03 AM
I've been going through the pellet selection process with my new TX and wanted to get everyone's opinion on the results.  Which are backwards of what I would think.

Based on threads started by others, it seems that the general consensus is that most TX's prefer H&N FTT 4.52.  My current testing is proving that this is not the case here.  They say a gun wants what a gun wants right.

I started with the FTT 4.52 and then proceeded with the rest of my testing.  You can see from my attached picture that the FTT 4.52 are not the best group.  It seems like this TX prefers smaller head sized pellets.

The right hand side target is actually AA Field 4.52 which are the loosest fitting of the bunch.  Almost too loose where I feel that I have to pay attention so the pellet doesn't fall out of the breech.  Oh....that flier to the right was ALL me.  That was my first shot and I pulled it...lol.

I'm also not too sure about the AA's in general.  The last batch I had were significantly larger than these.  They were more on par with the way the  JSB 4.52's fit.  These are noticeably smaller for some reason.  Not sure if this is the norm with AA's but I would hate to settle on these and then the next batch be larger again.  I have been told by some to just stick with JSB or H&N because of this.  Even though JSB makes AA's, it's with AA's dies.

The target shows that the smallest groups appear to be the JSB 4.52 and the AA 4.52.  As the head size grows smaller, so do my groups.

Forgot to add that these are 5 shot groups and shot at 15yrds.  The center bull is 1/4".

Sorry for the small pic, but I accidentally deleted the higher resolution one.

Comments?

Ed,

I too have a new TX200.  The rifle shoots tight groups with AA Express 7.87 pellets and FTT's in the 4.50 head size really well.  The pellet should be snug, but not tight when pushing it into the breech.  If you have to press really hard with your thumb, the head size may be too big.

I have used quite a few batches of JSB pellets and AA pellets.  In my experience, AA have been much more consistent when it comes to head size.  The JSB 8.44's always seem to be quite variable and almost always undersized.  I don't even buy JSB pellets anymore.  To each their own, I guess.

I would recommend trying the following pellets:

AA Express 7.87
H&N FTT's in 4.50mm head size
H&N Sniper Mediums
H&N Baracuda FT
AA Heavy

The LW barrel has a good shot at liking some of these.

Good Luck!

I'm using the Vortek SHO kit.  Did you shoot these stock, tuned, or Tony Leach?

How did the Baracuda FT do?  Might give those a shot.  Gotta buy both head sizes....lol

Its never been "Per-Say" the gun ??? ... but the barrel.   Tx's in past years and the specs that appeared consistent on the used lothar walther barrels created the lions share of the threads read in the past 5 years or so.

If the current barrels by LW are indeed being made a tad tighter, this is a GOOD THING and your data can be added for the more recent tx's

I first tested different pellets in the rifle in the FAC state.  In this state, the AA 7.87's were the most accurate.  After installing the 22mm Tony Leach Kit, both the AA 7.87's and FTT 4.50's produce groups less than 1/4" at 20 yards.

I'm anxious to try the Baracuda FT's in the Regal.  I'm waiting for Trenier Outdoors to get them in so that I can order a single tin to try out.

My TX-200 which is @ 4 years old ..... H&N FTT 4.52's have been it's typical best liked fodder.  JSB 7.87's tho a lot looser fitting tend to be very good shooting as well tho exhibit a tad wider ES range.

See that's what kinda confuses me. My Prosport (with your right fitting guides via nitrocrushr) shoots loose fitting AA 8.4's the best, in my opinion, so far. I always presumed that snug is best and my snug fitting pellets I have are the brown box cp kites which aren't that bad. But like someone mentioned above, "it likes what it likes".

Snug to a point where pellet is held until pressure pops it loose .... CONSISTENTLY
Or too snug creating a late or delayed release similar to too loose creating the same release inconsistencies.

Yup ... they like what they like, so the effort to find what the pellet is indeed pays dividends in accuracy & consistency.

Did some more pellet testing last night.  This is just the first round of elimination.

These are all 5 shot groups at my 15yd indoor range.  The squares on the grid are 1/8" which makes the bull 1/4".

I picked up some of the new Baracuda FT's in 4.50 and 4.51 and they both look promising.  I will keep everyone posted until I find what this gun likes.

If you had the choice, accuracy being equal, would you pick the heavier or lighter pellet?  I ask because I'm thinking the FTT's and Bara FT's are going to be close.

In recent years ALL my Field target set ups have gone to the heavier lead ( In all calibers ) finding they buck the wind so much better.
Down side being your scope needs to be of higher quality to get very accurate ranging data.  Loopier trajectory requires it !!

My TX200 likes JSB/AA 8.44 gr pellets but likes CPL and H&N FTT.  I settled on the JSB/AA pellet at the time as I had a bunch and set my rifle/scope up with them for FT which is a lot of work.  One of those 3 should work for you.  The JSB 7.87gr pellets weren't as good for me though work well for others.  Just buy a bunch of the suggested pellets and try them out.  Figure out the best but circle back down the road and try them all again as you may get different results.

4.52mm 8.64 grain H&N and don’t look back..

Based on tonight's test.  I'm thinking you are correct.

The FTT 4.52's seem to be the current best.  I really wanted the new Cuda FT's to work but the FTT edged them out.  Maybe they will shine when I'm able to test them out to 50.

Seems as though all groups have tightened up.  It could be me, or it could be the fact that I also did a follow up with some JB Bore paste before the last test.  I've done this on all of my other rifles with the same results.  I give it an initial 50 passes.  Shoot a few hundred.  Follow up with another 50.  Shoot a few hundred.  Give it another 10 passes to finish.  All JB treatments were followed up with a cleaning to get the bore paste out and ending with krytech.

Figured I would attach a few pics of my TX.

Motorhead...my wheel looks just like yours....lol.

I had to go custom to get the clearance from the stock.

I was doing some more shooting with the FTT 4.52's in the TX200 and decided to get out my HW97K to see how it does in comparison.  I haven't shot this gun in a while since picking up my TX.  The HW97K is "Lights Out Accurate" as you can see from the two five shot groups.  We are talking a small fraction of an inch when compared to the TX but they are smaller.   I do need to zero the HW though...lol.  I don't know if this is because it has more shots through it and has settled down or it's just more accurate.  I shot the TX and HW over the chrono to see what the shot strings looked like.  They are similar, but the TX's numbers tell me it that it possibly needs to calm down some more.

Another thing I noticed is that my TX's groups move slightly from bull to bull.  I'm guessing this would just be my consistency and the TX is hold sensitive? I checked the parallax using the head bob and the crosshairs are locked on.  The HW seemed to put them in the same place.  Maybe the HW is less hold sensitive?  Maybe the FTT 4.52's aren't the best pellet for the TX?  Only more testing will tell.

Looking for suggestions/input on the TX's accuracy
