NOGA indicator holders

A long time ago I saw a video on NOGA indicator holders. I was very impressed with their function. About 5 years ago I saw one at a flea market and asked how much it was. The guy said $20, and I snatched it up. I think they were $150-200 at the time.
A year or 2 later I found a NOGA knock off at another flea market. It had some issues, but was only $5, so I bought it. It wouldn't lock the arms properly, and the switch on the front was busted and moved very hard.
I finally got around to fixing it this morning, and thought I would share on how the NOGA's work. There is a shaft inside the arms with angled ends. As the knob is tensioned it drives the inner shafts down onto a ball that locks the arms into place. I was always fascinated and curious about how they worked. So I tore into the $5 knockoff hoping to repair it, and no great loss if I couldn't.
It appeared that the length wasn't adjusted properly on the outer arm, so tightening the knob wouldn't completely lock it in place. As far as the magnetic base, I pulled out the switch, then the magnet. It was covered in small pieces of grit, making it difficult to turn. I cleaned everything up and put some axle grease back on the magnet.
Don't make the mistake I made of putting the magnet on the outside of the base like in the picture. I had to take it into the garage and clamp it in my 5" vise and use a pair of vise grips to pry it off the housing.
I can highly recommend the NOGA holders, even the knock offs.

Interesting read. Thanks. I’ve got a knockoff and it performs quite well.
