Lathe Die Holder

For many years now I have been intending to make some die holders that can be held in a 1/2" Jacob's Chuck or a Lathe Chuck.... Without one, it is pretty difficult to start a die straight on a shaft, particularly a small machine screw thread.... I have a job coming up where I am going to have to thread a 1/8" valve stem with 5-40 threads so that the poppet will be better secured, so I decided today was the day to make a die holder that would fit the assortment of 13/16" OD dies I have for 2-56 through 12-24 threads.... I started with a 2" long piece of 1144 steel, and here is what I ended up with....
The shaft is 1/2" diameter, and 1.2" long, which will allow the shoulder to go right up against the end of the Jacob's Chuck in my tailstock.... and of course it will do the same in the headstock 3-jaw chuck.... The front end is bored 0.817" ID to a depth of 0.260", and there are three holes drilled and tapped for 10-32 setscrews at 45 deg. to each other.... The setscrew in the center hole is 1/4" long and machined to a 90 deg. point to spread the slot in the die, the other two are just 3/16" long 10-32 setscrews.... As with any adjustable die, you can clamp or spread the die to adjust it to give you the proper thread dimensions.... There is a 1/4" through hole for the shaft to pass through....
I think this should work just fine, and make threading small shafts and parts and keeping the thread straight a lot easier.... I plan to make a couple of other holders for larger dies someday....

Bob
Look's sharp and will work very well,
Loren,
My machinist friend helped me make the very same die holders for my lathe,
he had a bunch of 4 cutting teeth dies in lots of various sizes, which Loren gave me,
when he was training me for gunsmithing,
we added another adjustment screw 180* to the open die section,
and had to add other die holding screws to fit all the odd ball brands and styles.
He was a tool/mold die machinist/gunsmith for 75+ yrs, and had some oddball tools collected..........
like 1" and 1-1/2" square threading dies,
with no die holder that I have found yet etc.
Those round die holders, 13/16 and 1" dia holders, are the cat's meow,
for making threads that fit or cleaning up a messed up screw threads etc.
Also works very well in my 5c collet tool, on the 13/40 lathe.
Thanks, for the memories,
Don

Nice work! I've often though of making one. I generally single-point thread on the lathe. There certainly is a reason for the die holders, but I think they might put a heavy load on the mini-lathe.

I don't power the threading.... I just put the work in the headstock, the die holder in the tailstock, disengage the gearing or belt drive on the headstock, push forward on the tailstock, and turn the chuck by hand.... With small threads, under 1/4" it is really easy to do.... I just made that poppet stem and it worked perfectly, nice and straight....
Actually, I start larger threads with a tap in the tailstock the same way, hand pressure and turning the chuck by hand, until I can't turn the chuck any more.... By that time it's started nice and straight and I slide the tailstock out of the way and put the tap in a tap handle and lock the chuck to finish the job.... Works a treat for me !!!!

If it works, it's good technique!
The holder is certainly a work of art.
The following is only about me - When I first bought a little lathe, I did most single point threading turning the headstock by hand turning - a pretty good workout for the hand. A some point recently I decided to "get 'er done" and started threading under power and it's been successful. I am pretty pleased since I'm not so competent anymore.

Nice. I've made several of these.. for the smaller diamters they do work excellent for power threading assuming you have the torque to do so. Infeed threading something like a coat hanger wire would otherwise be impossible.

Interesting, it so happens I made an adapter for two sets of American cutting dies today. The two sets, though actually cutting dies and not re-threaders, are not round. One set is hss 1" hex and the other is 12 point hss. These sets are usually sold by Snapon, Mac, Matco, Irwin-Hansen etc...
I sacrificed a pawn shop KD Tools 1" 12pt socket for the adapter. Shortened the socket with a bimetal bandsaw and tapped a set screw. I also ground one of the inside points to accommodate the die's adjustment setscrew The socket's outside diameter is 1 5/16", same as the inside diameter of one of the tailstock sliding die holder adaters that came in a set ordered from fleabay. I was going to make that as well but hey, for $37 shipped, why bother?
When the sliding set arrives I will shorten the wrench side of the1" socket some more and final fit it to the sliding 1 5/16" adapter.
After that I'll probably make a 5/8" 12pt adapter for some 12pt 5/8" dies I also have.
