Title: My AJP just died!
Post by: Rat Sniper (AKA: PaulT58) on May 05, 2022, 01:44:44 PM
I was sitting in the living room this morning when we heard what sounded like a huge air leak coming from my hobby room!  I went to investigate and sure enough, the AJP had dumped all it's air!  I'm not sure yet what happened because I have not had a chance to really look at it, but I feel the air came from the barrel since one of my new rubber easer tipped arrows was lying on the floor next to it and wasn't slid onto the barrel like I left it yesterday!  Fortunately it wasn't seated onto the o-rings so I doubt it left the barrl at full velocity, and since it was in the closet leaning up against the wall, the arrow probably hit the underside of the wire rack.  After lunch I'm going to try and air it up and see if it holds air or if it's leaking and from where.  There is a burst disc, but if that blew, it's right next to the fill nozzle, so no air would have escaped from the barrel.  It did have a full 4500 psi fill, so when it let go it was quite loud!  I just hope I can get the parts to fix it and don't have to send it back for a replacement since I painted the fore grip and already polished the trigger and changed the springs!

Now that's a scary thought...  :-\

"But I swear, your Honor, I did not murder her".

Hope you get it figured out, and don't have to send it back.  I was looking forward to what those new rat mashing tips would do.

I called Umarex and they sent me a return shipping label, so it is going back.  I did tell them I painted the fore grip green and they didn't seem to care, they just said to remove any accessories I had added, so the rails and trigger springs came off.  I was suprised at how smooth the trigger still was with the original spring back in it.  Still heavy, but way smoother!

I also tried airing it up both cocked and uncocked with the same results.  Air just blew right out the barrel, so I'm guessing the valve must have failed.  I guess I'll when I get it back, they did say if they couldn't repair it they would just replace it!  The valve assemble is a big one piece sealed hunk of metal that does not look user serviceable, so I suspect they will either repalce the whole assembly with a new one, or replace the whole thing.

My thought too, but not sure how. It wasn’t being used, it was just sitting there so the only pressure was the regulated air that should have been holding it shut. It will interesting to see if they share what failed.

I’m pretty bummed about not getting a chance to test the eraser tips also. I have hopes for them though since I found the one that was on the barrel laying on the floor and it wasn’t damaged!  I just hope they fly straight!

Apparently it's the time of year for poppet failures, because both guns I have been shooting in the past week have developed poppet leaks, and they never gave me grief before.

Great!  I hope it’s not contagious!  A poppet pandemic!!!   :P :o ;D

One of my Cr150 suffered a "poppet failure"... IT is contagious! Now I'll have to implement social distancing between all my air guns?

The AJP arrived at the Umarex ER yesterday.  I received an e-mail saying surgery and recovery could be between 5-7 days, there's probably some quarantine period figured into that as well!  If they said if they can't resessatate they will replacement it with a new one.  So, it will probably be between a week and a half to two weeks before I have it back...  I don't know if I can hold off on that last rat that long!   :P ;D

One my SPA guns that started leaking around the same day yours did magically stopped. I figured it would slow leak out of the poppet until there was no air left. Clearly whatever debris was stopping it from closing all the way is gone. I was testing several different hand cast tin and lead pellets and some of them chambered kind of hard. My suspicion is that some tin or lead shavings fell into the the TP during loading. Hopefully they can just fix your AJP since you already painted it and started working on it.

I'm not so worried about the paint, it was all the work i put into polishing the trigger!  If they replace it, I'll have to do that all over again!  It was weird when this one let loose, it hadn't been used in a couple days and was just sitting in the safe when it just dumped all the air from the cylinder out the barrel.  So, I doubt it had anything to do with debris on the poppet, I think the poppet must have just disintegrated!   :o

I received a shipment notification from FedEx for a shipment originating from Umarex.  So, either that are really fast at fixing things, or they are just sending a replacement!  Either way, that's a pretty quick turnaround since it was just delivered to Umarex on the 10th!  FedEx is showing an estimated delivery on Saturday, so I guess I'll see when it arrives...

I received my package from Umarex yesterday, they replaced it with a new one, so I'll probably never know what actually failed on the last one!

This time, I took a measurement of the trigger pull prior to working on it.  The first reading (see below) was 10 lbs 10.1 oz, the second was 10 lbs 8 oz and the third was 9 lbs 11.9 oz!  I'll test it again after I polish all the contact surfaces and replace the springs with lighter ones.

This one is shooting slightly faster than the last one, but still well under the advertised 370 FPS!  Here is a 7 shot string from 4000 psi down to just under 3000 psi:

Shot count: 7
Low: 348
Hi: 357
Avg: 353
Spread: 9
STD Dev: 3.1
357
355
354
353
350
351
348

The last the broken AJP averaged 344 FPS over a 5 shot string, this one is averaging 353 FPS over 5 shots.

After zeroing it, I tried the Wat-Wacker tips!  These didn't work quite as I imagined, but I'm sure they will smack a rat!  They penetrated my arrow backstop rather than bouncing off as I was hoping.  They also proved to be a one time use item!  I won't be shooting them into my arrow backstop any more because they really tore some holes in it!  Below is an after picture of the tips and the target I was shooting that was placed in from of the arrow backstop.  The shot that is centered, but low, was after a scope adjustment.  It still needs to go up about 8 clicks, but I only made 3 Wat-Wacker arrows, so will need to build some more and figure out something else to use as a backstop!

Wow, I expected the tips to tear apart the erasers and keep going. I can't believe they are intact! Maybe some bags of compressed wood shavings would be more suitable.

Lowes has mulch on sale, 3 bags for $10, I wonder how that would do?

I posted the above info under my original AJP review post and will continue to add info there as I go.  Now that I have a replacement and it's working, I'll let this thread go...
