And im not talking about trying to read plates at 600 yards.

Good stuff here, I’m thinking a nice 10x50 is going to be the way to go for me most likely. I will get a spotting scope eventually but I usually not stationary with my binoculars. I keep them on a table or window sill, grab them and use them from Various points and angles from the house.
higher the mag = Wigglier view and a narrower field of view.8x is ideal

That comparison might just be enough to change your mind. I know it would be tough with the dreaded Covid, but generally in a bird/ship/train watchers group, somebody's going to have a nice pair they would let you look through. Otherwise you're stuck in a store hoping that they would have a pair they will let you step outside to look through. Be careful, that look can get expensive if you fall through. It's like cameras, scopes, guns or many other things that reach out to a distance.

☹️I had a retail store for 20 years and had to deal with jumping through hoops to answer questions and customer support only to lose the sale to a non brick and mortar online for a few bucks. Even tried not to get too mad when folks tried to return those sales to me. I guess that is why we don’t have anything but big box stores left.
