Title: Met the Neighbor Today
Post by: wolverine on February 05, 2023, 07:53:25 PM
every sunday after church i go by the house to see how much has been completed during the week.  today as i was leaving, a neighbor 2 doors down stopped by and we chatted.  he invited me over for a beer and as i walked into his yard i noticed a target hanging in the back yard.  turns out not only is he heavily into powder burners, but he has a .25 gauntlet and compressor too!  i thought i was going to have to shoot very discretely at the new place, but he says there are no rules against it.  so not only does he shoot, he had a huge, fully stocked machine shop too!  we discussed turning a new crown on my 2260 barrel and he showed me a small locomotive he is building from scratch.  he even turned the wheels himself.  so far i haven't met a neighbor in the new place i don't like.  how they feel about me is another story.  :o

Figure out his beer of choice, stock up and make a list of machining projects...  good times ahead!

I'm a friendly guy but I like to keep my neighbors at arm's length. I like visitors when I invite them.
Phone calls and texts work for me.
We've had maybe 2 visitors to our home in the past 6 months. And we spent one evening at a friend's in that same amount of time and as their other guests began showing up, we left.
We live in a very small town and know many of the locals. We see them out at stores and eateries and visit with them... that's where it usually ends.
I've met a few here on the forum that I've felt comfortable enough to invite and few have. However, they live miles away and go back home after the visit until next time. They don't knock on our door at midnight asking to borrow a cup of sugar..  ;)

i hear ya Bill.  unfortunately my wife is very social.  i can't count how many times women have come up to me and asked if i was Joanie's husband.  i  had planned on moving down here and living discretely.  my wife didn't like any of the properties i like because they were too rural.  there is a fully wooded lot between us and he is trying to purchase it as a buffer.  it's hard to keep to yourself here.  the people are very friendly and outgoing.  i do warn them that i'm not one to play games and will say exactly how i feel.

An enabler living next to an enabler?

I wonder if they're going to get rid of their mutual back fence to make a longer shooting range for both of them.

Congrats on the good neighbor Carl!

Reminds me of when I left Los Angeles for a remote mountain community near Idyllwild. An older neighbor with a huge grey beard visited me my first night. Told me how most liked their privacy, but invited me to a social mixer that happened to be the next evening.
He warned me that some of the local social skills were lacking, there will be drinking, possibly some flirtatious activities maybe even some fighting... I told him I had seen plenty of that in the city and had no issues with it.
I asked him where and when. He said "at my place, whenever you get there is fine... it's just you and me..."
 ;)

Sounds like a great place.  As long as key swapping doesn't start ::)

Our neighbor who moved here about a year ago wife is 1 of those friendly types and is constantly bugging us or the only other full time resident Rich and his wife. My Wife ran into Rich in town and he asked my wife how do you get our neighbor to leave you alone.🤣🤣😂😂

This is an example of what I try to avoid at all costs. I don't like being rude but it's better than shooting people...  ;D

to the OP- awesome.  A shooting buddy in the making!

My wife and I are naturally antisocial.  We're social distancers by nature, prefer outdoor activities, and have a small select group of friends and family we interact with.  Hence our eventual moving to our 15+ acres a couple hours west IF the darn concrete guy gets his head out of his arse.

I don't mind neighbors as long as they keep out of my business the way I keep out of theirs.  Social butterflies are quickly identified and excluded.

Peter, i agree.  if only i could corral the wife.  she is out of town this week with a dozen other woman at a beach house.  i went to the store last night and was called out by 2 of her friends.  i said hi and kept to myself.  we don't have more than an acre, but it's on the water and anytime i want to escape i can jump in the sailboat and go anywhere.  one of the advantages of living on the AICW - Altantic Inter-Coastal Waterway.

sounds great. I should clarify that I'm often outside/out front working on projects (my 94 F-150, the yard, random lawn equipment, woodworking stuff) and my wife is usually working in the yard as well.  Her sister is very social and fills up her day beginning to end... and is finally starting to realize how demanding that type of relational experience is to the psyche.  We're meant to be social, but not like bees and ants.  There's no hive mind!

The AICW is a great experience for recreation.  If you head up into Chespaeake you eventually will run into my ex's in-law's home.  My ex-FiL was a lawyer and custom home builder, hated the 1st job but it enabled the 2nd which he loved.  He's not a bad guy, just has a real piece of cr@p for a stepdaughter (and now he knows it).
