I'm just getting into pcp guns and wondering which way to go so I can start off right. I have a fill station nearby and don't plan on doing a great deal of shooting, mostly just targets in the backyard. So many options. Is the JB Great White a good way to start? Would a smaller tank and compressor(not hand pump) be better? At 68yrs old a new CF tank will probably outlive me.

things all depend on what you have available locally for filling your tank.
A carbon fiber 4500 PSI tank s the way to go if there is anyone close by to fill it.
EBay can be a good source for used CF tanks but look at the dates closely as CF tanks will only be able to be filled for 15 years from date on manufacture. Also look at the date of the last hydro as the are good for 5 years. I've purchased several from E Bay and have made out good every time but I am sure that is not always the case!

Figure out how many shots you need/want between tank fills. Also consider how much heavier the SCUBA tank is versus the CF SCBA.
If a fill shop is nearby I wouldn't even bother with a shoebox...

Can't go wrong with the Great White but if your filling is so close and your shooting is all smallbore pellet guns (no air hogging bigbores in the future) a Tiger Shark would be plenty.
This is how I see it:
CF tank - Local fill station
- 60 min (Great White)
** small bores with high fill pressures above 3k (eastern european PCPs and CF bottle guns)
** small bore with 3k fill (Crosman, Hatsan, etc.)
** bigbores with fill high pressure 3k and above
-45 min (Tiger Shark)
** small bores with high fill pressures above 3k (eastern european PCPs and CF bottle guns)
** small bore with 3k fill (Crosman, Hatsan, etc.)
CF tank + Compressor
- any size
** bigbores - lots of shooting
** the need for complete independence
SCUBA 3k
** low fill pressure guns 2k and below (Discovery)

Here is what's going on with Norm's suggestion. 5 years for $150 is $30/year...and the tank is a 44 cubic foot/30 mins tank. The next hydro will be its last. It's been my experience that tanks just shy of their first hydro are the least expensive( say $20/year for 44's ), if you are willing to spend about a month looking.

I got a shoebox because it cost me $100+ for each fill. :( My wife likes to shop & eat while waiting on the tank. LOL Now that I have a shoebox I do not stress over air and can shoot more and play with disassembly of my Hatsan without worry about running out of air and spending a fortune on women's shoes.

My tank will now out live me. :) Then again it will before the extension. Both my parents died in their early 60's and I am 57.

I think it more like "How heavy of a tank do you want to carry", I have SCUBA and SCBA tanks, the SCBA tanks are much lighter, better to carry out hunting, SCUBA's are good for Target shooting, I got my SCBA Carbon Fiber/ Aluminum on EBAY, paid $65.00, I have my own SCUBA compressor so filling is not a problem.

I just got off the phone with Mark Anderson from Digital Wave Corporation. The 30 year extension is only good for US Navy SCBAs. They expect to get approval for civilian (fire department) tanks later this fall. Even then he is not sure how the process will work. They do not have the capacity to do the number of tanks expected so are looking into how to make the process available. As of now, he has no idea about this $49 re-certification that is mentioned above.
