Sears/crosman 600

Just picked this up, at a very reasonable price. Then got it home and turns out it doesn't cock. So much for the seller telling me it works!! I should have known it was fishy when he threw in some bb's and said it shoots both pellets and bb's. I would have bought it anyway, as I try to get a Sears versions of Crosman guns when I can, and it is probably fixable. Actually hadn't seen the Sears version of a 600 before. My wife said she didn't know why I was so happy about getting this gun since it doesn't even work.
But hopefully not a big issue, maybe a trigger spring or easy part. Anyway, I was wondering if there is any difference between the Sears 600 and the Crosman 600. Externally nothing stands out. Other than the trigger issue, this one looks to be in really nice shape.

Congrats!
I suggest calling Rick at Precision Pellet.
He helped me with mine over the phone.

Nice find!
Hoping it's simple to get back into service.

Hi Jon,
I have a Sears 600 but it must be a slightly different vintage. The lettering on the sides is different -
I've completely stripped this one down and other than the lettering, everything is the same as the other 600s I've restored, so I believe your assessment is correct.
There are different variants of course.
What is the cocking problem?....
cocking slide won't move back? cocking slide doesn't pull the hammer back (no felt resistance)? cocking slide pulls the hammer back but it doesn't latch?
Open the side plate to see if it looks like this:
Check for missing/broken components and springs. Try pulling the cocking lever back while you observe the trigger group. The hammer sear should go up and the trigger sear should go aft to latch the hammer sear. hth-

I pulled the cover plate and this has the same trigger as Gary's (what a nice specimen that is!! And yours has the desirable Co2 piercing assembly). Played with it a bit, and it may just be frozen up with dried grease from sitting around. Working the slide and playing with the sear parts, I was able to get it to cock a few times. So, penetrating oil and a few days soaking and I'll try it again. If the trigger works reliably, then I'll see if it holds gas. I've rebuilt these a few times (yes, Rick at Precision Pellet walked me through a problem on one, great guy), so not afraid if that is what is needed. We'll see, maybe get lucky and just start shooting it.

Well, the trigger freed up after soaking in penetrating oil overnight. Odd that it wouldn't cock with the cover plate on, but would when it was removed. So I loosened the screws on the plate and the trigger cock, gun fired when I pulled the trigger. I figured it was well enough to try a powerlet, but the gas leaked out pretty quickly and the repeating/trigger mechanism never cycled. So, looks like a teardown and rebuild. At least it doesn't look like I'll need any trigger parts, so good there.

That's mixed good news for now I guess. Yes, a teardown, cleaning, blueprinting, and reseal is in order. Good that you don't need hard to find parts!
With the addition of the stop roller and stop, some of the side plate casting needs to be removed. I did that on four of mine but don't remember exactly what.
If your trigger group works freely with the side plate loosely torqued, then don't worry about it.
Four places the gas can leak from a pierced cartridge...
1. Valve Stem - these can be resealed but it's a little bit tricky. You can get a replacement from:
https://www.crosman600repair.com/
2. Valve body o-ring size 113
3. End cap seal o-ring size 113
4. Piercing button seal o-ring size 005 but it doesn't look like you have that
Take your time and don't rush or force anything. Don't work on it if you're frustrated. But you seem to have plenty of patience... a very good thing -

Well, fixed yet? I do love the 600's myself. They are satisfying and fun to shoot. I have torn down and went through 4 now. I was told by a well known expert that it is best to just make sure they are good before trying them so they don't brake because of bad hard grease.

Speaking of side plates, some have five holes, some six. I think it has to do with the stop roller & stop.

I just acquired a 677 that seemed to function OK but jammed after a powerlet was loaded. The 677 was a later version, like yours, that had the stop (600-90), stop roller (600-92), trigger assembly (600-93) and a modified side plate installed. The problem was the stop was pressing down on the pawl and preventing the disconnect sear from engaging the hammer sear. I removed the stop but left the roller in place and the gun worked fine. It's a mystery to me as to why Crosman added the stop parts. Both of my 600's are the early version without the stop or roller and they function just fine.

From Crosman's addition to the service manual.... The stop and stop roller have been added to improve trigger and firing action.
How's that for really nailing it down, LOL!
From my experience... in the uncocked state, the hammer presses onto the valve stem and holds it open. You therefore have to cock the pistol before piercing / charging a new cartridge. This could be potentially dangerous if the trigger were pulled during the process (remember that an auto-loader can have a round chambered, assume it does). The stop will slide up and hold the hammer off of the valve without it being fully cocked - see the pic sequence:
Uncocked:
Cocked with just the Stop:
I can load a new cartridge in this state - the hammer is no longer holding the valve open
Fully Cocked:
Note the cocking slide positions (you don't have to move it very far)...
Uncocked:
Cocked with just the Stop:
You may be able to see the metal I removed from the side plate to get this thing to actually work. I'm not sure it's worth it or if my assessment is consistant with Crosman's thinking.... but I hope that helps-

Wyo, I think your spot on as to why Crosman added the parts; they're not about to admit the earlier guns could be dangerous if a pellet was chambered in the feed arm, the gun cocked, then mishandled during cartridge replacement.
The side plate on my 677 had been machined in an attempt to relieve the pressure on the stop but it didn't help. I pulled the stop out because I felt it just wasn't worth all the time and effort to try and get it to work correctly.
