So, I went today to scout a beaver pond I am planning on trapping and I decided to bring along the recluse and the foxpro.
I set the called and the lil critter decoy. Out about 45 yards in a beaver swale. I started with nutty nut hatch with the volume at 15. About 1 minute into my calling I think I notice a quick flash in the tag alders to my left. About a minute latter I see a coyote appear from the tag alders into the edge of the beaver swale. I shoulder the recluse and put the yote in my crosshairs at about 50 yards and watch him walk slowly toward the decoy. When it gets about 15yds from the decoy I gave deliberate "whoop" to stop it. It stops and I settle the crosshairs on its front shoulder and pull the trigger (when I say pull I mean pull because the trigger on my recluse is horrible)! The coyote spins a couple of times and retreats back into the alders. As it is running off I notice its right front leg is clearly destroyed and dragging. I'm thinking "yes, finally".
Well I continue calling for about 5 more minutes and decide go to claim my prized quarry. After tracking the coyote for approximately 1/2 mile through the swap I finally loose the track in a criss cross of other tracks and end my pursuit without recovering the coyote. I was shooting nsa epp 79gr. I bought a sample pack,of swagged hp's but I haven't had time to shoot them. I guess I need to get to the range and do some shooting and need to do some trigger work on the recluse. ......coyote 2.....recluse.....0.

Wow Brian....so sorry.....thats really a tough one to take.
Wild game are REAL GOOD at hiding when they want to.
Things Will Improve !
Something similar like that happened to me once. I trailed a Whitetail Deer for 2 miles or more. I was lucky and found it in a dense thicket of cedars. It was snowing at the time and the snowfall was covering up the tracks, on and off. The blood trail was intermittent to nonexistent. It was shot thru the neck and bled out internally. It was my 14 yr old son's first buck ( He's is 47 now ). I was bound and determined to find it. It took from dawn to just before dark, to finally locate it.
Best Wishes - Tom

Those are hyper tough animals. Way tougher than a deer or even a hog in terms of having the grit to make it a long ways on a mortal wound. I've never taken one with an airgun, but I've killed many with PBs and they can go a long ways even when they've had their body cavity quite literally cleaned out by my firearm load. I once had one go 200 yards on a head-on shot thru the vitals and out the rear end with a .270 rifle. I trailed him via his internals he was leaving on the briars. Didn't have a gut in him by the time I found him. The .270 deflated him like a balloon. And yet he had enough life to make it that far.
My brother has been stacking them with his .25 Condor this past week. 3 prior to this morning. This morning he took a big one with a lung shot with pass thru at 60 yards with at 120fpe with a 60 grain hollowpoint. The coyote still made it 100 yards. A deer would have likely crumpled at 25 yards. No blood trail. I think he found it with his trail dog. It turned out to be a fine double lung shot.
You're doing well on the hunting side of it to bring them in like you are.
We all want the cleanest kill possible. But its going to happen with such a tough animal. I bet you get better results with the HP.

Oh man 2nd time! That stinks. Have you practiced with the gun at the same distance you shoot the coyotes at? What kind of groups do you get with the gun? The first time if I remember correctly it was a total miss, and now it was more like a leg/shoulder shot? Maybe the gun lost zero?

The Recluse does have a heavy trigger, and in the heat of the moment can cause a shot to be off. Nice work calling them in though !
