I acquired a home tuned Old School El Gamo 300. I think I paid $150.00 shipped for it and it shot like a much more expensive rifle. I decided to cut the barrel down to 9" like a TX200 so the dwell time would be reduced. I did it and crowned the barrel. Got even better. Then one day it just wouldn't cock. Turned out she had a broken spring.
Well, I shipped her off to John Thomas. I've always been happy with Johns work and he only lives about 130 miles from me, so cheap on shipping also.
I'm sure he'll go over anything it needs. I don't have choke blocks, he does. I was happy with the crown job I did but he can do better I'm sure.
So, this little carbine sized R7 in power comparison rifle is a great little shooter. I started with Crosmans in the 70's, then a resurgence in around 2007 with a Gamo. I quickly found Crosman again. Discovery, Marauder, then finer Spring guns like Diana & HW, AA's, moved up to AZ Rapids before long.
I'm after a super accurate .30 or .357; but I have to say this. A tuned Spring rifle is still the most fun for simplicity and a well tuned .177 RWS 48 is just perfect for anything I need it for out to 75 yards.
The little El Gamo 300 I keep limited to 40 yards but she's dead on out to that distance. I've yet to have the pleasure of a finely tuned FWB 124, 127, or others. Never even seen one in person but I'd sure like to. The El Gamo 300 taught me that power isn't everything. I'm not a 10M guy. I did own a tuned Walther LGR but I let it go. Maybe I'd appreciate it now, who knows.
Sometimes I think I should go completely spring gun again. Not always easy. I love the simplicity and consistency. I also love the other side. Oh well, I'll stick around, learn what I can, share what I can. One day I'll get the small machine shop I want.
So Gamo gets some credit, especially the older El Gamo brand.

Glad to hear it's shooting good for you. Never used John in PA. but his reputation is great and highly thought of on the Dianawerk forum so I'm sure it will shoot lights out after he's done. I started in the hobby 7 years ago with a gamo big cat with the plastic sleeved barrel. Had a light, cheapy feel to it and a horrible trigger yet with practice I killed many squirrels with it. I regret not picking up one of the cheap refurbs that were available recently. Would like to one day find an old 220 and work it over. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the gamo has been copied plenty so must be a very sound design. Would like to see pics of yours.

John has put an HW50 spring in it and says it is unbelievably accurate with JSB 7.33's. I don't have any of these but I'll get some. I hope it's the same batch/head size, etc.
I was VERY happy to hear him say my home done hand crown job was good. He may have choked the barrel a slight bit as I cut it down to 9". He said he wasn't sure if it would be worth it though with as good as it was spitting the 7.33's. He did state that it may make it less pellet picky; but could also cause a loss of the pin point accuracy that the JSB 7.33's were now giving. Said high 600's was where it's at w/ 7.33's and would break in a bit, (Best I can figure without a Chronograph, rifle still with John, not broken in and pellets from 7.0 to 7.9=6-8ftlbs) I was very surprised as I thought this was a stock 12ftlb rifle. POSSIBLY, cutting the barrel down caused me to loose some speed. John said with tube diameter & swept volume he could never get this to 12ftlbs. That's OK. I just am very surprised at what it was capable of out to 40 yards. The only reason it was sent to John was a broken spring. If it comes back better than before, then that's enough to make a Man want to walk away fro The Darkside!
I'd be happy to send you pictures via phone once I receive it back. I've never learned how to post pictures online. This is a bit off topic and I actually need to start a thread to ask about this. A Friend who is a wood worker has built a Lictograph machine that makes beautiful lightning strike patterns in wood. I'm considering having this done to this rifles stock. I think it'd look swell. I'd like to ask a professional if it would cause any cracks or damage, or just be burned in streaks on the outer layer. So I'll take before photos, and if I'm told it's OK to shock it, after pictures also.

One more thing, in case someone here reads this and knows.

This stock has no varnish on it. Just natural grain and a stain. I'm told bare wood is needed for the Lictograph to work well.
