Alloy pellets in brass barreled guns?

It's a question that's come up before, but the selection of alloy Lead-free pellets has grown, different makers must use different percentages of metals. .22 GTO's are extremely accurate, I wouldn't mind using them in some of my classics at a Lead-free range.

Why go there I would imagine they are for steel barrels. Have to be harder than lead?

This is a good question. If possible I would want to explore that avenue as well. Any less lead in the environment is good. I use only lead free shot these days and will be switching to copper on rifle reloads.

45 Flint there's an indoor range that's lead free and some of my brass barreled guns are a bit too loud for yard use, so that'd be the only place to give them a workout.

Seems a reasonable thought, maybe purchase a variety of lead free pellets and compare the effort needed to deform their skirts compared to standard lead skirts? It is about as non scientific as one could get and in no way addresses if the lead free pellets are more or less abrasive than their toxic cousins, but it is a start.
Good luck.

Of the number of non-lead pellets that I've had experience with, there are none that I would recommend for use in anything other than a steel barrel.

I wouldn't use them in a brass barrel.

I emailed H&N about running Green pellets in brass barrels a couple weeks ago. A guy from R&D got back to me and said H&N has never tested brass barrels. He thought maybe the tin pellets would leave debris in brass barrels if the bore surface is rougher than steel bores. I replied that the concern was about the hardness of alloy pellets damaging brass rifling or causing premature wear. He replied that H&N Green pellets are 100% tin, and his personal opinion is it would be safest not to use tin pellets in brass barrels, although H&N never tested that combo.
I accuracy tested Green pellets in brass pumpers in the past, and accuracy wasn't good anyway. The barrels still shoot fine with lead. So, 5 or 10 tin pellets won't ruin a barrel, but a stready diet of them is probably a bad idea.
I wonder what Crosman thinks about it.
