Title: Rattus #12
Post by: ranchibi on August 10, 2018, 07:55:28 AM
Welll, tonight or should I say this EARLY morning, 3am I woke up being uncomfortably warm here in muggy CA. So, I decided to check the bait station as there has been this super elusive rat that I have been seeing since #11 last week but have not been able to get a shot off at it because of how wary, athletic, quick (like a blur) it had been. It would literally jump 2 feet from a nearby bush to the brick wall which the bait station was propped against, then back up into the bush in less than a second, never eating any peanut butter but just a quick sniff till this morning where he was on the station when I saw him with my binos at the same time the ding donger decided to chime in! Alas, I had prepped the Compatto, tripod and pellet at the ready before going to bed last night. I quickly loaded the 15.89, turned on the IR, flipped open both scope caps, rested the Compatto on the tripod...gone...back....LOL!...right where I had the crosshairs before and took the shot in bad lighting but hit my mark, thwack down he went. This was THE most elusive rattus to date, literally a phantom, I pay my respects too him, a young very smart subadult male.

This isn’t the elusive one, this is the scout. The phantom one was watching you taking this one out.   8)

That's some sharp shooting at 3am, under muggy condition (and with probably a full bladder)!

You've certainly earned your spot in the rattus sniping premiere league on GTA.

Well done, Sir!

Erlis, you are pretty spot on with your thinking as I shot his buddy last week. He came later looking frantically for him...maybe that’s why he was so wary!

Dinh, thank you very much! LOL, bladder was SCREAMING at me the whole time! The lighting has been dismal as there is a large tree that when full of leaves blocks the street light and only the red flood light barely makes things visible. I “thought” I had posted this in the Hunting Gate after shooting it...guess I was still groggy posting it here! LOL, thought the post had vanished! Boy, do I feel toopid :).

If ranchibi has been on vigil at that kill zone for a while, he is breeding phantoms, because they are the only ones left to breed!

Kitro, that is hilarious! Thank you...but, I don’t think I can dent the rattus rattus population here! That dog in your Avatar is beautiful! Is that a Kangal dog!?

Randall, you did post this in the Hunting Gate, and we are getting reports that this doesn't belong in the Airgun gate.  I am going to try to merge the 2 topics.

#12!!!!!! I'm glad to see you have all the rats going to your feeder...... just kidding, but I haven't had a rat since I forget when...... Squirrels at the feeder now, but they are very skittish.......they take off as soon as I go in the patio..... I'll get them, just need to put up some Camo net Bug screens in the window......

Nice shooting there Randall

Kevin, thank you very much! Boy, I’d rather be shooting a ground squirrel in daylight than these rattus at night..the lighting has been really bad since this big tree has grown its leaves blocking the streetlights light that usually helps illuminate the bait station! Maybe you made the rattus extinct in your neck of the woods! :)...or they’re scared out of their wits and are keeping a very wide berth around your property!

You can setup one of these for your rats and a feeder for the squirrels

This is really effective

Not as fun as shooting but effective

Dinh, true true! Been so hot and muggy here....I usually sleep thru the night but, with weather like this I don’t mind getting up and ratting for a spell! Although this rat rig is darn cool :).

I've got the Walk the plank bucket trap (same thing), it works, but it has killed more birds than Rodents, not that I mind, but it's not as fun, I like being interactive with my pesting, thus the need for accurate pellet guns, the bucket trap is mainly for the ones that won't go to the feeder, but still need removal.

Kevin, I too like to interact with my pests and offer them a JSB sleeping pill :).
