I found a sleeper in my closet.

A couple of years back I acquired a pair of Crosman Summit Ranger break barrels.  I have one in .177 and the other is .22 caliber.  Neither one was a startling performer when I got them and I couldn’t seem to find the right pellet for either of them.  So I stuck them in the back of the closet and left them.  I’ve been pushing things around and moving air guns out to the man cave and I unearthed them.  I sat down with the .22 this afternoon and gave it a thorough barrel cleaning and tried some 17gr Ruger SuperPoints through it.  At fifteen yards it was making one big ragged hole with iron sights.  That’s pretty good for me so I stretched it out to 25 yards.  At 25 yards the group opened up to about two inches but that is me shooting with iron sights.  I figure a scope will get that down to around 3/4” at 25 yards. 
I liked this gun when I got it for a variety of reasons.  The synthetic stock fits me very well.  The real metal iron sights are the best I have seen on a Chinese air rifle.  Steel and aluminum.  No fiber optics and a very nice sight picture.  I appreciated that the gun came stock with sling swivels since I do use a carry sling on my hunting rifles.
The Summit Ranger is a well appointed basic hunting air rifle with an adjustable trigger that actually works.  What’s not to like about it?  Well the accuracy of mine stank.  Tomorrow I plan to hang a scope on it and see if the SuperPoints do tighten things up.  If so, I might have another shooter in the rack.

Never seen that model, will have to look up the details,but the metal sights are great on the older Chinese rifles.  Its really disappointing they gave those up for fiber optic sights.

I suggest trying some Excite Hammer 22 14.66 grain pellets. They are relatively cheap but I've recently had several air rifles really LOVE these pellets.

Thank you for the recommendation Mike.  I’ll give some of those a try.  The Ruger SuperPoints are kind of a sleeper too.  They shoot surprisingly well in several of my air rifles.  So much so that they are my preferred hunting pellet for the XS60C, the Crosman 3622, and 2200.

I chronographed the .22 caliber Summit Ranger today.  Ten .17gr Ruger SuperPoint pellets went from a maximum of 627 FPS to a minimum of 618 FPS for a standard deviation of 2.7 and an average of 14.5 FPE.  Accuracy at fifteen yards was excellent with all pellets in one ragged hole (open sights).  14.5 FPE is nothing to sneer at but I was really expecting more like 16-17 from a NP2 powered springer of this length and bulk.  The shot cycle is also rather rough especially for a NP gun.  The adjustable trigger is excellent however. This gun is still slated for disposal but at least I can promise the next owner that it is a capable shooter with easily available ammo.

The same cannot be said of the gun's .177 caliber sibling.  I cleaned the barrel diligently and then started with H&N FTT's.  They were NOT WORTHY!  The spread was all over the place with a high of 955 and a low of 897.  7.9gr CPHP's were no better.  The old Winchester domes with the yellow printing went an average of 906 fps for 14.44 FPE and had a SD of 5.5.  Umarex hollow points were in the same ball park.  So this one is a dog.  It goes to the garage sale too!

Like the Ruger superpoint .22s, the Spitzkugel .177s are a sleeper pellet too, in my opinion. Especially in lower powered guns.
