Help with stripping paint from carbone fiber stock
«

I have a sweet pillar bedded mcmillan edge stock. Only thing wrong with it is it has a coat of cheap paint. I am working at it with a scotch brite pad and soapy water, also now trying mineral spirits on scotch brote pad.
What can I use on it to strip it without damaging the stock?

I would not use a "green" scotch-bite pad. There is grit embedded in it which will scratch the surface. There are non-abrasive blue pads which are made for cleaning acrylic bathtubs and the like. You should be able to use lacquer thinner to remove the paint which should remove the paint without affecting the resin. I would test a small area with a q-tip to confirm. Do not soak the stock....Wipe on-wipe off Grasshopper! :-)

Cured Epoxy is pretty tough stuff.... Lacquer thinner should be OK, you might even get away with Acetone if you don't leave it soak.... Test a small area on the butt, where it won't show.... If it leaves the stock glossy and not sticky, it should be OK.... Acetone can be used to clean up uncured Epoxy, so go easy until you are sure it's not going to soften the cured resin.... My gut feel is about 80/20 that Acetone will work, and 95/5 that Lacquer thinner is OK.... I would stay away from commercial paint strippers, they are intended to dissolve plasticized finishes.... and will soften/dissolve most plastics....

If it's an oil based paint such as enamel, you can use automotive brake fluid, but you'll have to let it soak and that could take a LOT of fluid.
It's an old trick from my plastic modeling days.
Or maybe try some of the green paint removers?

Be careful when working with carbon fiber. There are tiny shards that will go right through your skin. I still have some of the stuff in my hand. I suggest that you wear gloves.

Mineral spirits wasn't noticeably better than the soapy water, neither was 91% alcohol.
Got some more denatured alcohol tonight so I will try that, then acetone in a small spot if the alcohol isn't satisfactory.
Thanks yall

Are you sure it's an epoxy resin and not a acrylic resin? Epoxy will be fine with acetone but IMHO I wouldn't use it on an acrylic resin. If you scratch the surface while removing the paint you can use a 1500 gr sandpaper and wet sand it. Then just spray it with some clear paint and it will look real pretty. By the way, I have 30+ years in the aerospace industry working with Carbon and fiberglass composites.

Yes, if its acrylic acetone may react faster than you can, try the lacquer thinner first.

I was gonna say acetone. but it looks like ya figured it out. ive wiped down thousands of square feet of carbonfiber and kevlar, hundreds of thousands of feet of fiberglass with acetone.
it the only thing we use in the laminate composites business

What about using a heat gun and plastic scraper, I used this method on other things but never a lam stock

Heat gun/scraper might work, but this stock has stippling in it. Not scraping anything out of there without a lot of trouble and a dental pick or something.
Why even go through all that when paper towels soacked in acetone wipe it right off. Unless it's sensitive to acetone of course.
But might that heat also ruin it?
