Crosman "lego" 2k revisit.

A few years back a few of us were putting these together using the 22XX platform parts.
Parts I put in mine include:
Steel breech
18" cut and crowned .22 barrel
Disco valve and fill assy.
2260 tube (drilled to pin valve)
2240 trigger and frame
Challenger power adjuster
and a few other minor odds and ends.
I had it out yesterday and put a different silencer on it just to finish off the end and I had it laying. Backyard friendly is not a requirement around here but I gotta admit... a pellet hitting the target louder than the gun it came from is kinda cool.
I left it in the Red Shed over night with the plan to shoot it some more this morning. The temp dropped into the low 30s over night and the gun was empty of air pressure this morning.
I fired the propane heat up to warm up the Red Shed and filled the gun back to 2k. I'll check it again in a couple hours. If it's still leaking it may be time to go in and replace orings, check fill assy and poppet.
I also want to see if there are any signs of moisture that may have gotten into the gun over a few years.

Oops, I lied.. this gun is a .177. I had it confused with the "lego" pumper I had out with it yesterday. That gun is a .22.
But, I do have a factory .22 362 take off barrel and bolt. If I end up tearing it down for a leak I might put those on the gun... or maybe even if it don't leak..
Either way, I'm going to run a string over the chrono before I do any of that. It will be interesting to compare .177 and .22 in this gun

Love the Crosman Lego guns. Hopefully it was just cold out and you don't need to reseal it.
I took my Shin Sung Fire out to the blind when the temp dropped to 15 deg for a hunt. Started off with a 2500psi fill and ended up with nothing. Filled it up the next day at room temp and it's still holding air.

Yeah... that could be it. This gun has never leaked before and I've left it for months at a time in the cabinet.

Man... I'm not sure I want to do anything to this gun if it don't need resealed.
I just ran a chrono string and from what I see I have a great 20 - 25 yds paper puncher and paintball popper at 3FPE using Crosman CPUM 10.5.
Accuracy is well within MOP (minute of paintball) at 25 yds.
That's a pretty respective bell for 47 shots and a 2k fill.

Yeah... I think I'm just going to top it off and bring in the warm house and check it in the morning. If it holds air I ain't gonna change anything. Use it for what it's good at. Might even be a good casual match gun.

Yep, it leaks.. about 500 psi in about 3 hours.
Oh well, it will give me something to do while I wait for the NOTOS to be delivered tomorrow.

Well, it shouldn't leak no mo...
It was cow pie flat on empty this morning. In reality I was hoping it was for a couple reasons.
One is because I wanted to get inside and see if it had any signs of moisture and two because I was on the fence about converting to .22.
What I found inside; First things were some out of shape orings.... hard and distorted. These were the 2 that seal the valve to the cylinder. The one sealing the fill assy. and the one sealing the valve halves were in good shape but I replaced them anyways.
I didn't find any rust but I did see some signs of oxidation inside the valve. Not a build up but more of a dusting. It polished right off. I also used a brass 12ga. shotgun bore cleaner and some Ballistol to clean up the inside of the cylinder. I pulled several patches through to clean/dry up the Ballistol. The first large patch came out with blackish residue. The next 2 or 3 came out clean and looking down the cylinder, it was nice and shiny clean.
Next I cleaned the bore on the new take off .22 c362 barrel and put a new oring on the .22 bolt probe. The probe made a positive seal to the barrel. I could even hold the barrel vertically and the oring held the probe in the barrel.

I solved the mystery of the flat, low fps shot string....
I forgot that I had installed the BStaley oring buffer in this gun when I built it.
I left the orings out this time and we'll see the results of using the power adjuster to fine tune the gun.
If I don't get results that make me happy, I may put a couple back in... I had 3 in it. I think it will take less buffer to push the 18.1gr .22 pellets respectively to make it a formidable plinker/pester within 30 yds.
I certainly don't expect 47 shots per fill. I'd like to shoot for 30 flying somewhere around 600 fps. We'll see.
Let's go find out...

Interesting...
First off there were 2 unrecorded shots at the top of the bell. I think they were dupes.
Secondly, I got quite a bit of hammer bounce so I'm wasting air. Putting the oring buffer back in should control that.
And finally, between the oring and backing the hammer off should lower the fps and flatten that bell some. I think the 30 shot at around 600 might be a closely reachable goal but I think we'll get closer to 25 shots. Possibly reducing the FPE to 12ish. Remember, this is only a 2kpsi gun with a relatively short 2260 tube .
I would take a 30 yard shot with that on small fur or feather. Those 18.1gr domes are going to carry some impact downrange.
Still waiting for UPS...

I just want to talk about the BStaley oring buffer for some of those who aren't familiar with it and have asked about it. This is a good thread with examples to explain what it is and what it does. Those of you who already know, please be patient with me....
The buffer is simply a stack of orings that fit snug in the tube between the front of the hammer and the back of the valve. Normally Buna #110 orings fit snug enough as in this case ( also the size I used in the FD-PCP ). The stack of orings control how far the hammer pushes the poppet into the valve when it strikes. There are other ways of doing it such as changing the valve spring and balancing the hammer spring to valve spring ratio and requires more fiddling with pulling the valve in and out of the gun to get to the desired sweet spot.
The BStaley oring buffer, sometimes referred to as (the poor man's regulator) is a simple way of emulating the idea. The oring buffer is also an easier way to reduce hammer bounce than making an SSG (spring stop guide) or a TSS (twin spring stop). Both of those spring stop methods and more reliable as well.
The number and thickness of the oring stack can be adjusted to get the desired results. The hammer spring adjuster can also be adjusted to increase or decrease the dwell time (how long the valve remains open during the shot cycle) and fine tune the bell curve of the shot string.
Notice the first string I shot with the oring buffer installed when the gun was a .177.... not near the control of a regulator but miles better than the .22 bell without the buffer installed. The fps comparison also depicts the difference.
I hope this helps those who don't know understand a bit better.
For those who do understand, please feel free to correct me in my understanding if I am wrong.
With that, I'm going back out to add the oring buffer and see what we can do with it.

It's great to see this older platform getting some love. I need to break out my own Disco based blaster and see what it's up to. Haven't done much with it since switching to the pistolgrip skeleton stock. I've most of the bits for a second build, but need to pick up a Maximus barrel for it. I've got an itch for a long barreled open sight shooter.

Thanks Paul..
I've got a few guns of the lego flavor around here in various forms. I have 2 of these carbines running on HPA. This one now in .22 and another I set in a spare Crosman 180 stock. IIRC it's a .177 but I'd have to double check.
UPS showed up with the NOTOS as I was headed back out to the Red Shed then Betty Lou wanted to make a store run. So this lego will get pushed to the side until tomorrow morning. I'm gonna spend a little time getting to know the NOTOS.

Ok, the NOTOS is good and I seem to have gotten a good one without many of the issues others have had but there is some fine tuning and tweeking needed.
But I want to get this HPA lego finished up before I get too deep into the NOTOS.
So that's the plan this morning.

Went out when the dogs went out and fired up the propane heat in the shop. It's 36 outside right now and it was just above 40 in the shop. I'm comfortable with anything over around 55 in there. I'll keep the inner and outer roll up doors down while I tear the lego down and install the oring buffer. After I put that back together I'll work on that sticky mag and dig into the trigger and cocking linkage on the NOTOS. That should keep me busy long enough outside to roll the doors up and get some test runs on both guns.

Houston, we have a problem...
Those guns don't have gauges so you can't monitor monitor fill pressure. basically all you can do is connect the tank or compressor and listen for the check to open or watch the gauge on the compressor closely. When the check opens the needle will fall a bit before pressure starts increasing it the tube. Or, you can let the gun sit for an extended period of time and just dry fire it. That's what I did this morning and it was flat.
Only a couple things it could be at this point.... I didn't change the small oring in the fill assy. Or maybe I need to chuck the poppet stem in the drill press and burnish it to the seat in the valve. It might have some debris from that powdery oxidation I found in the valve. These are aluminum valves... brass won't do that.
Oh well... breaks over... back in the mud slime queens.

Full circle brought me back around to here. After playing parts mahjong to put the 3622B together I found myself with the remains of this 2260 hpa tube gun on the bench.
So I put it all back together with what I had left over. I tipped the barrel with a newer style Crosman front blade sight, the one with the FO in it. The rear sight is a Ruger 10/22 flip up peep sight wedged into the cross dovetail with a section of drill bit shank.
I aired it up to 2k and loaded up Crosman .22 ultra mag pellet. I pointed it down range and squeezed one off.
WHOA !!! that thing cracked like a .22 short. Betty Lou came out of the house and asked me what I was shooting. She said Boss and Rambo both jumped up out of a dead sleep.
Got it sighted in and went for a target of opportunity walk about.
Just having all kinds of fun here in the Red Shed.
