...and rabbit meat too. She breeds champion standard poodles that eat an almost exclusive raw meat diet. We have an overabundance of squirrels and rabbits. She seems to think a harvested squirrel or rabbit must be frozen for at least a month to kill all worms/parasites, even if they are fully cooked before serving. I told her that's the whole point of cooking the meat. If the game were to be served to the dogs raw, how long would it need to be frozen? And served cooked?

Just soak it in a salt water brine overnight, rinse the meat, then repeat for a second night, rinse and serve or cook. No need to freeze.

You won't be able to kill any bacteria, etc. by freezing it at home. Household freezers don't get cold enough. They freeze fresh salmon to get rid of bacteria before making lox. The fish needs to be frozen at least 7 days at a temp of -10 degrees. As, you mentioned, just have her cook it thoroughly

If you are talking about feeding raw wild meat to high priced dogs, it probably isn't worth the risk. Many parasites will be destroyed after a prolonged freeze at -10*F or lower, but with no way to be absolutely certain, it sounds pretty risky. Cooking is the sure way to destroy parasites, like Charlie said, you don't even have to bother freezing it first. My family and I eat hundreds of pounds of wild meat a year and enjoy good health - proper meat handling and cooking is the key to success there.

I appreciate all the input, she'll read the thread when she gets home. When I go deep sea fishing (been about 6 years) they filet what you catch. Anytime I caught Cod by the time I got home there were worms swimming around in the bag with the filets (Cod eat sea lion turds).
