I was a Crew Chief on F4-E and then F16-C.
I am always receiving "static" from other armed forces members about the cushy job I had... yeah, right.
I was the first on the Flight line and the last one off. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, 100*+ or sub zero temps... "cushy" they say.
This made me laugh.

One of my PERSONAL favorite stories...
I launched
MY
F4-E (yes, MINE... as long as it's wheels were on the ground) for what I thought was going to be a regular sortie.
Those are usually only 45 minutes because the
only
carried 15,000 lbs of fuel. So there is really no reason to go to the Crew Room, heck, it will be right back.
After an hour of my being on the flight line, and no return, I began to worry. After an hour and a half I called RamRod on the radio.... No word.
15 minutes later,(1 hr 45 mn) the pilot lands... I am flabbergasted!
Parking him, putting in the chocks and mounting the ladder I say in haste...
"SIR.. Where the HE!! have you Been?"
Now bear in Mind I am in Ft Wayne IN...
Pilot says "Utah"!
He went from home to Hill Air Force Base Utah, refueled, and BACK in 105 minutes... THAT is COOKIN!
Must have been in full AB most of the trip!
But we can't talk about its max speed of Mach 3 plus... even though that jet was retired decades ago.

I touched the one near Tucson (when no one was looking) I've driven by the the one on the Intrepid many times and can't help but stare.
Amazing beast!

My older brother was a rear seat photographer on F4's during Vietnam. He rewrote the combat camera manual for photo recon. When he retired as a bird colonel in 1982 he was presented with a presidential citation for actions performed during the war. He volunteered to fly rear seat in a mission over North Vietam to photograph the layout of the Hanoi for a possible rescue mission to release our POWs. A F4 was stripped of everything that could come off and loaded with drop tanks to have enough fuel for the trip. Somebody miss figured their mileage, after the mission that had to ditch at sea when they didn't have enough fuel to find the carrier they were hoping to land on. They were picked up and returned to their home base with both of them and the film intact. The mission was scrubbed and the plan was kept secret until the day he retired.
To him and his pilots their crew was the most important men at that base. His pilots always said if our crew does their job right we come home. If something goes wrong up their its impossible to find a good mechanic.
The video and story with it was GREAT. It was you could imagine the twinkle in their radio man eyes as he keyed that mic.

There used to be a Blackbird at the Space center in Huntsville, AL. It was AWESOME! I don't know if it's still there or not.

Thank you Guy for that.
Us crewmen were always "behind the scene".
But the Pilots knew their life was in our hands.
The SR-71 leaked like a sieve on the ground... but in flight the friction made everything expand and seal up. You really wen't supposed to touch it with your bare hand as the oils from your fingers would distort it at those temps.

Scott, my father was an armeror, not sure if that’s spelled right but he fixed and loaded the guns( and bombs) on a b-26 in ww2. That plane is in the Smithsonian in Washington, flak-bait, anyway, he always referred to her as his plane, flight crews came and went I guess but the ground crew stayed. Anyway, when my daughter called him while standing in front of his plane at the smithsonian and he told her to give her a kiss from him,,,he was 92 at that time, he would have loved swapping stories with you. He loved the Air Force.

We called them BB stackers... true story.
She was MY jet... and I treated her as such.
Your father had the same mentality.
I guess that goes true with any mechanic, whether it is a Jet, a Hemi 'Cuda, or a moped... they are our babies to care for.

Yeah, me likie this thread. LOL
Have time maintaining the B-52G BUFF, A-7D Corsair, F-4D Phantom, EF-111 Aardvark, AC-130 Spectre Gunship, A-10A Thunderbolt II and finally the B-1B Lancer. Speaking of the Blackbird, here is a link to a speech from a sled driver. It's about an hour long but well worth the time for us "dookies". Or "wing nuts".
We are called several names by the other branches. All a symbol of pride for me.
Keep the stories coming folks!!!
I'll relay one short story. My hometown here in TN has/had a very important piece of military property. It is home of Milan Army Ammunition Plant. MANY ordinances were made here. While I was stationed in Korat, Thailand in 1975, I was strolling down the tarmac performing maintenance on the chaff/flare systems on the A-7D. I looked at a loaded aircraft and see a 500 pounder labeled MAAP. A very eerie sense of pride flowed over me. Being so far from home and seeing a piece of it there in such a remote place was a bit comforting.
More later, if I can clean them up enough. LOL

So for you, and others ...
Here is proof if you put a big enough engine(s) on, even a brick will fly.
