In the Tennessee woods where I hunt, I occasionally come across plants that I didn't see in Louisiana. But the Prickly Pear Cacti were common to Luisiana (as well as many other states). A couple years ago, I decided to bring some home and see if I could get them to grow better than what I saw in the woods here.
The pictures below show what has happened to the two plants I started in 2021. The first picture is May 22, 2023.
The fourth picture shows what happens after the flowers have dried and fallen. The arrow points to the Prickly Pear Fruit. Yes, it is good to eat, as well as the plant itself.
The fifth [last] picture was taken today. After those two flowers that are blooming, I have only one more bud. Then begins the waiting process for the fruit to ripen some time in late summer or early fall.

That would be the kind of thing a person does only
once
.
The 'Glochid' are the smaller hair thin stickers. I have had many encounters with those. A strong light, magnifying glass, and tweezers are often needed to remove them.
