Thanks to Lloyd-ss and Rocker1 I'm doing my first custom one off build.
Now Lloyd sent me a hulk of a .32 barrel! I'm talking you could beat Superman to death with this thing!
Rocker1? Well he sold me a really nice lathe with some cool stuff to go with it!
1st thing I needed to do was take some metal off the barrel. Some metal don't even come close to what has to go!
That would be like saying I need to remove some stuff to make a BattleShip into a row boat!
I did take a few pics that I'll up load later but I have an old friend coming over to give me some advice on what to do as I'm out of practice with lathes.
-
Need to take a few parts for the lathe in to town and get some stuff.
Barrel wobbles a bit as is so need to correct for that.
Not that I'm worried about what it looks like. I want it heavy and have no plans to try to quite it down.
I actually want it kind of ugly.
;D

Jeff I'm sure that when you're done with this gun it'll be way cool, can't wait to see the finished product 8)
-
You can see what the breech end looked like to start.

And what I'm still cutting it down to.

I need to get a consistent diameter so it passes through the lathe for further work.
Down fall of a small lathe I guess. Rocker is lucky he suckered me into this lathe before he shoots me!
;D

Same Lathe I have. I did a .357 barrel just like this. It took so long (couple nights) to get it to .505". Told myself I will never do that again. Good luck and can't wait to see the results.

I did the same thing on the same lathe with a springfield .303 barrel , took about 6 hrs all in one shot.. my only advice is to use a carbide insert tool to not have to fight the heat and tool wear.
-
Yep. Carbide inserts. Found a butt load at an old shop I demoed so they were free.
:D

Looking good there Jeff, it's nice to see some pics, is that one of those Harbor Freight lathes ?

Yes. Rocker1's old lathe. He did a lot of upgrades on it and suckered me into buying it.
;D
With all the stuff he threw in? I got a heck of a deal and he didn't shoot me!
-
I've thought about buying one of those but I never expected to ever turn the OD on a barrel with it, just make smaller stuff with it is all, I'm sure it'd be a lot of fun to tinker with.
-
I've been making small parts with it for awhile now.
This is the first large barrel project I've attempted.
I could have ordered a blank and saved a lot of the work but with the trade to Lloyd?
Good time to play.

I think the spindle bore is 20mm , so once you get below .787 , you should be good to go working the barrel in the spindle which will be far more rigid and allow for more depth of cut
-
I take that back , I think the chuck bore is smaller than that , I don't have this lathe model anymore so im not sure..
-
5/8
-
5/8
yep was just looking it up
-
This project sounds awesome!!
That's the same kind of lathe I'm putting together! ;D
-
The fun part was planning cuts to fit the lathe.
This much barrel turned down, flip it around then do some more.
Then flip it around again a few more times!
;D
All this just to get it on a somewhat close diameter.
The diameter I have it at so far will pass through the lathe for future work.
That involves cutting the breech area to length and turning it down.
I also want to get it close to the outside diameter of the MRod shroud.
-
Doing good there Jeff! 8) I see you put some ball bearings on that steady rest. Great idea that I will have to borrow from you! ;)

Lloyd
That steady rest came with the lathe Rocker1 sold me.
Think I'm gonna need another like it but for smaller diameter work. This one handles 1" - 2". Next step down is the one that handles 0" - 1". Littlemachineshop has them.
-
Are you cutting the whole thing down, or just where it fits into the receiver?
-
The whole length is getting turned down.
-
I forgot, what is the land/groove diameter and what are you shooting out of it?
Really interesting thread. Always admired you guys that had machinists patience.
-
I'd have to check about that info. It's a .32 so I plan bullets.
-
Stumbled onto this section this morning and being a Mrod freak I had to ask whatever became of this project. I was looking forward to seeing the finished gun.
-
Never happened. It would have been good but I bought a 30 cal for the price this would have cost.
