Squirrel Apocalypse

This time of the year, I'm very used to seeing flat tree rats along the roads. These are common sights in my semi-rural area. However, this past Saturday, while taking my son to a soccer match, a couple of towns over, we came across this one small stretch of a very busy freeway, that was just litter with nutter pancakes. Dozens of squirrels in about a 100yd stretch. I've never seen anything like it! It's if a semi went over and dumped out a cargo load of squirrels at this particular spot.

I imagine this must be what Disco Dave's place looks like on any given day  :o

I may have to go back to visit this area, now that NH allows air guns for small game.

There was an article in the Boston Globe talking about the squirrel overpopulation in norther New England causing huge damage to crops. Seems like the squirrels take one bite of an apple then move on to the next one, again and again. We had the problem last year due to a banner year of acorn the previous year ,now the chippers and tree rats are few and far between .

One might think we don't have so many squirrels as they did years ago, but I guess it could still happen: a squirrel migration. I've read accounts where they descended on a crop area like locusts and the people would organize a response, bagging hundreds, if not thousands. Wow, could you imaging being in the middle of something like that? Maybe a few would hold still for a shot...
