Tuning Question?
«
on:
January 09, 2019, 10:05:41 PM »
First of all, I'd like to praise all the great airgun tuners we have here at the GTA.
Motorhead
, Travis and
Rocker
......... are fantastic choices.
My question involves working on a piston. Can a piston be slotted aka R10 via a drillpress or does it require a mill. I could use carbide drills on the drill press and finish off with a Dremel or is a mill the only choice?
Put in this situation as I ordered a HW85 piston (for my R10) from chambers as it was a different stock # than the HW95's. Unfortunately, got a HW95 piston anyway, with no slot. Not even sure the thing will fit my R10 as I haven't opened her back up yet.
Assuming the piston fits, which is the best way to create a slot per above?
Thanks,
Kirk

The longitudinal stability required to run an end mill in full plunge mode down a length of steel tubing takes a MILL.
It is going to chatter SO BADLY that unless the vise holding it and carriage that makes it move is VERY SOLID as well the head stock of the Mill / Drill robust it can turn into a mess in short order.
Now one could drill end / end holes in tube and then using a slit saw/ grinding wheel slice the material away ( being done under size ) and then mill it to size which one could do with a much smaller cutter and not have near the chatter issues. * tho a robust machine is still going to be required ... IMO.

Thanks
Motorhead
,
You know, I thought about this before I purchased the part, but forgot until now........., but if I drill/mill out the beginning of the skirt on the HW95 piston ... to fit my R10; I will need to completely, cut through the piston skirt and into the existing cocking slot. I think this will ruin its functionality as there is no horizontal strength to the piston.
I think I need to sell the piston as it isn't going to work

Sorry tuners,
I forgot the (unique) slot for the R10 is on the top and not the bottom of the piston, so no interference with the cocking slot ... whew
. Hence, I will drill the piston top with a carbide drill bit, larger/longer than the normal R10 slot so there is no question of whether or not it will bump anything.
Once the holes are drilled, I will use a diamond bit in my Dremel to smooth.
Problem solved, I think ............................
