Title: Ten Dollar Pellet Trap
Post by: Airik on December 09, 2011, 02:38:10 PM
I spent 10 dollars at W*l M*rt on a pellet trap. The little yellow one with spin targets. I don't use the spin targets, just paper targets mounted on a piece of old cardboard that one can slide down into the trap in the provided slots. The Storm XT was putting some nice dents in the back so I put a 1" thick phone book (the newer smaller Yellowbook ones) inside at an angle (fits perfect!). It is a smaller trap (6 1/2" x 8") but no complaints so far. Cheap!

you can also drill  holes in the back for two 1/4" wood screws and cut some 3/4 pine board to fit that back plate (inside) and cover the board with carpet scraps and screw it to the back plate from the outside.

Good thinking, Brian. Especially with the softer wood. Everybody should know not to use particle board or harder wood because the pellets bounce back! - I heard one pellet zing by by ear at 14 yrds in the basement one time using particle board - Lesson learned! This pellet trap def needs a handle on top also.

If you think about saving your newpapers, or the junk mail, you can pack them tightly into a suitable cardboard box, 8" +, and they won't go thru, unless you shoot some super high PCP job in the same spot a lot of times.  :)  Enjoy the hobby!

Ya, for a small item, that is the most awkward trap to pick up and move.

Err, I meant *by my ear* - not *by by ear* lol - but it could've been bye bye ear! lol. or an eye. Going to make a habit of wearing shooting glasses I think.

@kymike, I hear ya - I was using a Coleman queen inflatable mattress box, stuffed with a pillow and newspapers to the max, with a paper target taped to it, but some pointed pellets went through with the rifle, at 28 yrds outside, hence me getting a store-bought pellet trap.

Yeah, I'll probably throw some camo duct tape on this cheapo pellet trap just for sh**s & giggles : )

If you shot thru 8" plus, of tightly packed layers of newspaper...at 28 yards...well, ummmm...how much you want for that A/G?   I use this same setup for magnums, (RWS 48/52)  JSB heavies&CPs, they never go deeper than 4" @ 10yards !!!
I used to put 3/4" plywood in back, but it never got touched, so I don't even put it in anymore.  I use standard liquor store type stout cardboard 8.5" x 12.5" x 13.5" wine bottle boxes. Weighs about 14 Lbs. packed to the max. I "interleave" 2 of them at a time, when I stack them (ie.  Left then Right) so they lock in together and don't get higher on one side, keeps them level.  It don't blow over in the wind.  Don't shoot a hole in one spot, and they'll last for thousands.  But they are cheap to make, so no biggie. Enjoy.

Lol. Well, it was just crumpled newspaper and a small pillow inside, so I could've done a better job at packing it :)

Yeah Buddy!,  The key is definitely to use a layering technique...like plywood, it's much stronger that way.  I didn't mention that if you put a piece of 1/4" paneling, or plywood in the center, as a final barrier in the center,  then you can turn it around and shoot up the other side.  Best to U!

don't think the phone book will work on my.22 cal walther talon or the 177.cal r.a.m,32gr in the talon at 20feet goes threw 1000+ pages of those small phone books,as does my 16.1 gr in the r.a.m.i,m having hard time finding any thing other than my old cast iron safe filled with heavy foam,to stop these beast.i would love to get a pellet trap like what you got,but i think these things would surely destroy it quick,.cause that safe is heavy, ;D ;D

Supertech77:  A 1,000+page telephone book is well under 1 1/2" ... at 20 feet....!!!  ;D  I'm talking 3" at over 30 feet, with at least the power of the Walther Talon.
Heavy Density Foam STILL, has Too much air per cu inch.  Paper, in layers, has none, persay.

its 1 1/2 inch exact, the phone book i am shooting at,and its more like 1100 page,s, i just measured it cause if you squeeze it together that's 1 1/2, i thought it was thicker because its all spread apart,so do you think the pellet trap there talking about will hold up to the gun,s i mention,?or will it get torn apart?

There's plenty more room to put more phonebooks/etc in this cheap pellet trap. I've only shot at it 10 rounds so far with the 1" phone book inside, so I really can't tell the damage done. But the grooves in the left/right sides make it convenient to load it up with something and slide a piece of wood in to keep everything inside.

Yes they'll work...if they're packed with material.  The prefab sheetmetal pellet traps that you buy, are generally not recommended for high powered airguns (800fps+).  If you can pack it to the 4" minimum depth, that'll probably do the trick.  I would put a a couple thick pieces of Cardboard on the front face to contain everything.  Phone books, Catalogs, Paper and junk mail, trimmed to size, is free.
EDIT: You can build a good sized (ie. 12x12x6" depth inside) trap from a 8'-00" piece of 1"x 6" pine,a few nails, glue, and some good ole' ingenuity.
There have also been a few other sizes built and photographed here on the GTA. Search "Pellet Trap" and you should get some ideas.  Best of Luck to Y'all !

Once upon a time, I used phone books when shooting my .177 Varmint Hunter. I was soon shooting through the books so I needed something different. Someone on the Forum wrote about duct seal and that did it. I now use a two-inch thick layer of duct seal for all my rifles. A couple of my rifles are quite powerful but none have ever shot through the seal. True, while the seal does take some maintenance now and then, it's only a matter of removing the spent pellets and smoothing over the seal. This stuff outlasts phone books/newspaper by a long period of time. I've used the same 2 target boxes with two-inch seal for over 2 years now with no problems or replacement issues.

Update:

I used 8 layers of tar roofing shingle material that was left over in the garage for the inside-backside of the pellet trap. I cut the material to size, wrapped the layers in duct tape, and bolted it to the inside-backside metal. I also put a couple layers on the bottom-inside. Should last forever. However, the spinners don't have enough room to spin if I was to use them, but I like paper targets for now. I also installed a drawer knob on top for carrying. Camo-painting it right now :)
