Damaged Gamo Magnum? (Warning)

My neighbor and I were shooting this past weekend and at one point his fingers slipped off the barrel as he was cocking his Gamo Magnum. The barrel sprang back into firing position with considerable force. When he subsequently cocked the rifle and fired it sounded different. He fired two or three rounds and could not see where he was hitting the target. We started looking at it and noticed the barrel was angled up at the hinge at a very noticeable angle. We removed the swarm and inspected the latch area and then noticed the breech block on the end of the barrel where the O-ring seals appeared to be literally smashed and deformed. I suspect the barrel sprang up with such force that it smashed the barrel breech block which now allows the barrel to rise above parallel. I suspect it will have to be sent back to Gamo for repair. Moral of this story, hold on to the barrel as you cock your rifle and don't slam the barrel back in battery after cocking.

Update! A call to GamoUSA and the rifle has been sent back to be rebuilt under warranty. Only down side is that there is a 4-6 week turnaround time for repairs.

That's mighty nice of Gamo to cover that under warranty.

Well it might be nice of Gamo to do the repair under warranty but I think they should do so. That sort of slip is not uncommon with break barrel air rifles. It often bends barrels. They can be straightened by an amateur. To have the break block fail suggests to me the rifle is not fit for purpose.

Allowing the barrel to slam like that can cause damage to probably any air rifle. It is a user failure & I am surprised that they are nice enough to cover it under warranty ! I wonder if other manufacturers would offer to do that .

Agreed, it's good of them to cover damage from operator error.
I would say that not many guns, regardless of brand, could suffer a slam like that and come out unscaved. Try it with yours, if you dare.
Then see if that gun maker/distributor will cover the damage...

Had bout same thing with couple RWS/Diana. 350 magnums, one time my fault, another someone else’s, and seen couple other makes, same thing in our club, manufacturer sez tuff stuff, fix it yourself, we do, seems like they don’t want or intend to fix, so everyone is very careful anymore

I am not much of a Twanger fan, but I bought one years ago that had severe damage from the same thing. The manufacturer would NOT repair it free, even though it was still under warranty !
I gave $15 for it & that was only because I liked the stock.
