The snobbery exists on all forums. Even this one. But you are correct, pm may be the worst.
Sounds like you have a good source of information you can lean on there.
Something to keep in mind, a 1hp motor will do everything a hobbyist might ever want to do. The 3hp is a beast and a Bridgeport can make some CRAZY cuts with it.
Good luck!

After reading about the single phase to 3 phase conversion on VFDs I have to admit I wasn't aware of the single phase to 3 phase conversion capability. That is the way I would go too. What I like is the capability of variable speed control on AC with out using some type of PIV.

Matt, my brother uses a rotary phase converter, he's very happy with it.

I run VFD's on my Southbend Lathe and Bridgeport Mill. The lathe has a 1/2hp 480V 3Phase motor and the mill has a 1 1/2hp
480V 3Phase motor. I purchased Hitachi VFD's (
https://www.wolfautomation.com/vfd-1hp-400v-3-phase/
) and (
https://www.wolfautomation.com/vfd-3hp-400v-3-phase/
). My house has standard single phase 110V 200 amp service. After wiring these in with new pushbuttons and potentiometers for start/stop and speed control I've had no issues running these machines on single phase power. I cannot recommend purchasing a VFD for these smaller machines more strongly.

As I'd stated at the beginning, ALL of the 'ideas' WILL work, but what would the drawbacks or benifits be for each. It's a good thing I'd stopped in to check this thread, those last two links proved to be very useful. On a tangent, I looked up the Hitachi drives and found this PDF for sizing VFD's.
https://www.wolfautomation.com/media/pdf/ac-drives/hitachi/hitachi-sizing-3ph-1ph-appnotes.pdf
Where Hitachi recommends taking the FLA rating off the motor capacity plate and DOUBLING it to size the VFD, as well as upsizing the overcurent protection, wiring etc. Great information, coming right from the source. I thought I remembered that there was no "something for nothing" aspect to going from single phase to 3 phase, the additional 'power' has to come from somewhere.
Unfortunately that brings us full circle in the cost aspect of the project. The cost to get a new single phase motor, a quality VFD, or a static phase converter or a rotary phase conveter are all fairly close or within 20% or so. However I'd say the VFD has a slight advantage in performance from it's ability to infinately control the speed of the motor, or mill in this case. For coarse adjustments I can use the belts on various pullies and for fine tuning, the VFD adjustments. Or possibly just pick a middle pully setting and adjust with the VFD, will see when we get there.
Thanks to all who provided input, hopefully this info is useful to someone else setting up their basement, hobby shop.
