Do these little air filter / driers work?

Do these things actually take out any moisture at all?

I have two of those on my eBay hand pumps and they seem to be removing moisture. The cotton tubes usually have discoloration toward the end of the tube closest to the hose but not toward the foster adapter.

They are better than nothing but not by much. The only type that truly works are the cartridge type like the alpha filter from Joe B.

Airnut:
I use them as my first stage of filtration and always run my air through two gold filters. One filled with silica gel beads and one with the cotton cartridge. I fill with a compressor and have noticed that the small filter does catch oil/ moisture. Have not seen any signs of contamination in the gold filters yet.
