I probably have more than enough right now but ...... I NEEDED another . This one is a used HW80 in .22 caliber. I was going to buy a replacement .22 barrel for the 177 in my possession but it shoots so darn well after I tuned it that I don’t want to mess with it. This one will be the hammer used for longer shots. I’ve already got an ample supply of .22 pellets in light to heavy weight so I shouldn’t have a problem finding it’s preceded pellet. Now I just hope this one has a good barrel which I’m sure it does from the group pics the previous owner sent. Can’t wait . +
I received the rifle today and I’m a little disappointed. Actually a lot disappointed. At first , it didn’t look too bad but after a few shots over the chrony things began to become pretty apparent that this rifle was not taken care of very well. It was dieseling quite badly and even with the dieseling was only shooting at just over 600 FPS with some as expected for a dieseling rifle big ES numbers. I quit after only a dozen or so shots. The dovetails are scratched up pretty bad and the action does have some dull spots in the blueing. There was some squealing and grinding while cocking the rifle and some play in the stock. On to the disassembly for a better inspection. The trigger pins are loose in the inserts in the trigger block , the main spring was not broken but the coils are coiled up so tight there was only an inch of preload . The piston seal looks burnt with a few burrs and worst of all , one of the welds for the forward stock lugs was broken off. I’ve got a replacement spring on order as well as a new style cocking shoe and linkage rivet. One e the spring arrives in a week or so , I’ll be giving it a thorough tune with the usual top hat , spring guide and piston liner not to mention weld the broken lug and replace the piston seal. Looks like I have my work cut out for me. Since this will be a ‘ long term ‘ project I think I’ll also tackle the stock but I will have to replenish my supply of stripper for the original finish.
I overpaid for this one. Air rifles are not in abundance up here so I jumped on the first and only offer. Lucky I do my own work otherwise I’d be in for more than a new one. For the price of a seal and spring and a 6” length of delrin I think it will turn out just fine. The weld from factory was not good. Just about zero penetration so it should be fairly easy to weld back on after I clean up the old weld. Pretty sure this will be my last used rifle for a while. I just put a few up for sale to hopefully recover some of the money I’m out. You live ….. you learn.
I'm sorry that you got a dud so to speak. I think it's shameful people put guns like these up for sale without coming clean on their condition. It's stories like these that keep me buying new. If it's any consolation, sharing your story here will save some other people from similar heartache. I still feel bad for you though. Hopefully you'll get completely functional and it'll be the gun you use the most because you're not worried about scratching it.Good luck to you Ron
Enjoy the incomin', y'all! Given my 30 yard range, my age, my collection of .177 air rifles, and the size of my gun safe, I suspect I'm about done with the acquisition of additional HW rifles. In fact, it may be about time to start thinnin' the herd a bit?
