Cometa Fenix 400: can't hear the sear engage

Hi all,
When cocking my Cometa Fenix 400 Premier Star, there is no "click" sound when the sear engages to hold the piston back, there never was. This wasn't a problem until it let go unexpectedly, twice in the 4 years since I bought the gun new. What happened was that the sear caught for a little eyeblink of time at the end of the cocking stroke, then let go. It didn't hold for more than a quarter of a second each time. Since I was taught well, I was controlling the barrel with my off hand like a boss and caught it before it slammed shut. Has anyone else experienced this before?
The first question for Cometa owners is this: does your Cometa Fenix 400 springer make an audible "click" at the end of the cocking stroke when the sear engages?
The next thought might be, is the gun safe?
I just now cocked, loaded and thumped the butt several times on the ground to test for a hair trigger and it did not fire. The trigger felt normal when I shot off the pellet. So I think the gun is safe after cocking. But I don't let friends cock this gun. Someday I may not catch the barrel if it goes flying.
In writing all this out, my confidence in this sweet-shooting, beautiful looking gun is less than rock solid. I'll follow up later after investigating tonight, it's too beautiful out to work in the basement this morning. Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks!

Have had a Cometa 400 for a very long time. Every since I have had it I have had to pull the trigger again after shooting to get it to cock. I call it a double pull on the trigger. When new I sent it in for repair and it came back working the same way. So just figured that was the nature of this rifle. It's a habit now and think nothing of it. So try the double pull..... When pulling the second time you can kind of hear something falling in place.... It does have a hair trigger...

Michael and Frank thanks for the input. I got into it the next day and found the spring in 4 pieces! I moved the rifle and the piston slid back and forth inside. The splintering of the spring happened today, but some could have broken previously. My goodness. Here is clear evidence that springs in a spring piston air gun are consumable parts! And that's alright, it's just a bump in the road. I happened to have another spring that fit nicely, amazingly enough. But you can buy one with the right dimensions through Maccari.
Regarding the trigger sears, I stoned the very edges of the sliding surfaces smoother, per the excellent documentation Michael provided, had to rebuild the trigger group several (more than three) times, to get all the parts where they should be so everything works. Squares of electrical tape temporarily hold the pivot pins in place, else they all fall out as soon as you look away.
I now understand how the two trigger adjustments work - turning the big screw tighter compresses a spring and increases first stage pull weight. The little one tucked in tight behind the trigger is the 2nd stage engagement between the two middle sears. I like both of them tightened almost all the way in. Matbe that is the result of cleaning up the sliding edges of the sears. I put moly on all the sears and 30 weight 3-in-1 oil the pivots, too.
The spring was a replacement for the Crosman Quest 1000x that I bought in 2016, that didn't fit the Quest, but fit this Cometa really well!
Original: 36 coils, wire dia = .119" spring ID = .485"
Replacement: 35 coils, wire dia = .121" Spring ID not measured, I got excited because it fit the top hat shaft almost snug, like the original.
Top hat shaft dia .469"
I test shot a few times with the spring dry, then I put some Tune in a Tube on the spring and oo la la, damped that twang out.
Of note is there is no "click" when the piston sear engages, but there is a window through the top of the compression tube that shows sear/piston engagement, it's visual!
You can "decock" the Cometa 400 series rifles and you can watch the sear let go of the piston when you carefully decock the gun. Confidence restored after having witnessed how things work inside. Dang thing just quiet about the final sear engagement. The final sear is visible through the window, with the flat side of the sear facing aft. The last shot is the piston captured by the sear. The sear check window is a cool design feature!
I'll see what the Chrony says tomorrow after the spring sets overnight.

Different gun but if I have my second stage to light same thing can happen, I have learned to have my trigger set a little heavier for that reason especially with my springer.

It's about 32°F outside and I Chronied three pellets through the Cometa with the new Crosman main spring:
New spring:
RWS Hobby @ 11.9gr: average speed of 892.3FPS, Energy at muzzle is
21FPE
Beeman Kodiak @ 21.4gr: average speed of 605FPS, Energy at muzzle is
17.4FPE
JSB Jumbo RS @13.43gr: average speed of 786.4FPS, Energy at muzzle is
18.4FPE
Original spring, tested in January, 2015
RWS Hobby, JSB Jumbo RS: not tested previously!
Beeman Kodiak: 609FPS,
17.4FPE
Meisterkugeln @ 14gr, 819FPS,
20.9FPE
So, the spring is a little different, but performance is virtually the same.

AS said the second stage screw adjustment is probably adjusted in to far? I do have a slight click in my trigger as it locks up on my Fenix 400 compact,

Shooting is not about theory, it's about practice.

I’ll have to check mine tomorrow.
My trigger weight adjustment screw fell out and my trigger is now wayyy lighter than I like. Is there a spring inside of the whole that fell out also? The silver colored screw/plug looking thing behind the trigger?

Tormentor,
The little screw connected to the rear of the trigger has no spring. Did you screw it within one turn from all the way in?
