Title: Better Water Pump for Yong Heng type compressor
Post by: betapotato on September 13, 2018, 03:18:07 AM
I have had my Xin Yong Shi compressor for a while now, and the temps were higher than I want them to be (75-80C).
It looks like many members here uses ice to cool down the cooling water in order to decrease the temps, but this is not the most economical solution and IMO, quite a hassle.
I was thinking instead of changing the ∆t in the q=mc∆t equation, I can simply pump more water though with a beefier pump and get the same result. However, I haven't had any luck finding a 220v water pump with the right fitting and plug.
Would be extremely helpful if anyone here who've attempted this can chime in and give some advice.
Thanks.

For what it's worth, I replaced the YH water pump with pond pump from Lowe's, and my temps don't get over 45C-50C even when filling my 90ci tank.  I am running straight tap water in a 32 QT bin with no ice added.  The flow rate of the pond pump was like 5 that of the pump that come with it.  I did have to get a couple reducers so the fitting would fit the hoses, but they are attached to the pump and are under water, so even though they may not be completely water tight, they are under water and stay securely connected and my flow rate is very good.

I had purchased the tuxing big compressor a few months ago and noticed that I was having a water flow problem. Looking at videos of others using their compressors it looked to be similar to mine. I inspected the inlet and Outlet of the water hoses to the heads and saw that the 90° fittings were threaded in too far and ended up removing over 1/4" of brass to increase flow. It almost doubled in flow. I don't know if this would be worth looking into on the Yong heng.

It is the transfer of heat that is the problem.  Try a water wetter first to aid in the heat transfer to the water.  Then see if you still need greater flow.

Head pressure ( is how high the pump can pump ).. The higher it has to travel ,  the lower the gph  flow rate... One other , as demonstated by Kerndtc, is the ease of which water will flow in a certain size passage.. Just keep the head pressure low and it will help.. The punps that come with these have a sliding control (valve) which can be removed or fixed open.. So flow pressure shown as gph is at the output of the pump , at the pump .. So the higher it has to pump the less gph it will output...
So try to keep the pump at a level half way between the input and out put on the compressor ....

Which large tuxing? The dual cylinder? Could you take a picture of the fittings your talking about? I have the dual cylinder and even after getting a larger pump the flow didn't increase much at all. Maybe I have a clearance issue.

I use a cooling reservoir roughly 2.5 gallons filled with small ice cubes then water.  Cools just fine and isn't difficult to manage.  If another pump helps some that is good to know but everyone should have ice available.

I when with a pond pump because my water reservoir is on a shelf below my compressor. The pump was rated to pump 3’ up hill. I figured this would give a good flow rate and it does.

I have the dual cylinder, it failed on me in very little time and am having a hard time getting any warranty.

I can't remember exactly which fitting it was. I think it was a 90° and I was able to see the restriction when the head was off. It was significantly blocked. Flow increased by at least double, maybe triple.

Ice is still recommended, I fill a 88l tank and after 15-20min the ice is almost all melted with the supplied little YH pump
so the water is still going to rise in temperature along with the cylinder head.

by the time I am done (20min) temp is around 44c and most of ice melted.
going to a bigger pump will help initially but once water temp rises it wont make much difference.

Not sure how ICE is not economical. Freeze two 2 liter bottles of water and just refreeze after each use. That is what I use. You don't have to buy ice every time you are going to use the pump.

If you are concerned with maximum cooling, read Yong Heng Compressor Question in the main PCP forum.  Poster Robert notes he has tried both frozen packs and ice cubes and the ice cubes keep his compressor about 10 degrees cooler than frozen packs.  May not be a significant difference but it is noted as a difference.

A frozen gallon container of water sits in my water/water wetter solution.  Return stream focused to hit top of the frozen container and cascade down it.  Cools well before reentering the sump.  Cold enough to chill get my compressor head to the point of sweating condensate in this humidity.

Robert,
I am curious as to why you would need a 220v pump living in Cali? Surely you have 120V available. Even if you bought a Euro/Asian version 220V compressor, the water pump would not have to be.
Go to your local pet store and in the Fish section and  You should be able to find a variety of pumps to suite your needs. Look at a "Powerhead" they are used on under-gravel filters. I have several but prefer a "Maxi-Jet".

they are small, magnetic (cool) motor, easy to clean if needed, I am sure the outlet is the size you need to push the hose for your YH onto with no adapters. ;)
They come in a variety of output. Ranging from 400 ltr/hr (head height of 24") up to the 1200 ltr/hr (head of 60").
Also if you DO require 220V try here...

Thanks for the suggestion!
I was trying to utilize the 8 shaped connector (220v) on the compressor to save a power outlet but looks like that's not possible. I will just go with a normal 110v pump now

This one is the one I bought. It is capable 400 gph but is adjustable so you can turn it down. I just run mine on a different circuit from a extension cord.

I don't have the box anymore and could not find a model number on the pump, but it did have the flow rate as 550 GPH.  Going a little over with the 660 GPH would probably be better than dropping lower with the 400 GPH model.

The water pump that came with my YH compressor failed after the first use so I replaced it with this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/160-GPH-Aquarium-Submersible-Pump-Fish-Tank-Powerhead-Fountain-Water-Hydroponic-/181921226620?hash=item2a5b599f7c (https://www.ebay.com/itm/160-GPH-Aquarium-Submersible-Pump-Fish-Tank-Powerhead-Fountain-Water-Hydroponic-/181921226620?hash=item2a5b599f7c)
It has worked great and keeps my temps around 42 deg when using a 5 gal bucket with water and lots of ice cubes. I typically top off my SCBA's from 2800 to 4200 psi.

Search for "Flow Indicator" we use them at work on water cooled equipment.

I have this same set up on mine to a 5 gallon water jug. And my compressor gets up over 60c on a regular basis. (Just sitting in my garage it stays about 28-30c never seen it go any lower than that.
I don't think that filling/compressing air so quickly is a good thing. I'm currently debating on Purchasing the Omega Turbo compressor. Seems like one of the better choices out there.

I just ordered a YH for $200 on Wal-Mart.com so I feel like I should have some protection. Already ordered the 13.5" long oil water separator and will do the molecular seive mod. Anyway I plan on immediately upgrading pump and will simply keep a low profile 5 gal bucket 1/2 full of water in my freezer so i can add water and start pumping. That's a lot of ice but I plan on filling my 9 liter SCBA tank to around 4000 psi.

Pumps have better flow when level with the compressor...   If you find the head pressure chart for your pump you will see how much loss of the gph per foot of head(height)........
