Portable shooting bench

Little bit more work done.  I messed up locating the holes for the bolts, so I had to re-drill them.  Awesome   LOL  I also had to drill a hole in the QD arms for a bolt. One of the bolt holes I got EXTREMELY lucky.  The clearance w/the locking mechanism is CLOSE.  But it functions fine.









Now I have to fill in the holes, so back to the hardware store I go, to get a dowel to use as a filler.  I'll double check the house, but I don't think I have a 1" dowel.

I'm taking a break to bake some pies for Thanksgiving, because this is frustrating me.  Another weird thing I found out, is that two of the legs are longer than the other two.  For arguments sake, we'll say the two rear legs are the same length, and the two front legs are longer.  Not sure why, but now I'll have to check to see if the base frame is level (I never thought to check), then go from there...

Got some more work done today.  I was definitely over-thinking the legs LOL.  The stand is level, the legs are offset where they bolt to the stand.
 Probably to clear each other when the legs are folded.  Anyhoo, I filled in all my mistakes, and am currently waiting on the epoxy to cure.  I did in fact have a 1" dowel in the basement!  Saves me a trip to the hardware store! LOL  I've also cut the legs down.  I just used a pipe cutter.  No need for anything fancy.  The overall height has been reduced from 35.5" to 30", right where I need it.  It's pretty comfy- I'm glad I went with this size top- nice and roomy!  I also cut out a handle hole.  She still needs clean up, paint, and the little endcaps added to the legs (they should be here Friday or Saturday) .











Pics aren't in order, so some of the pics show the mistakes unfilled.  But you should get the idea.  Thanks for tagging along!  I'll post more updates soon.

 Looks to be solid nice work on a pile of scrap wood. I would just of used a cordless driver and whatever wood almost fit without need to be cut... you get the picture

Yeah, looking back on it, I definitely over-thought this project.  I could have made a much smaller top and I didn't REALLY need to have a "traditional" shooting bench shape.  But for all the frustration (woodwork isn't my forte), it's been fun.  I can't wait until it's done though! LOL

I cut the top to fit the size I needed, and then clamped it down with the B&D bench,
it is very portable and secure, and works very well.
It also fits in any vehicle and the 4x4 side by side,....ymmv

I am attempting to find the post that had a pivot built in to the shooting bench,
using the B&D stand/clamp, IIRR there was 60* of pivot on each side of the center line,
I remember a bearing was used and had a lock for when shooting.

Gets to be a pain when squirrel thumping and have to move the table,
to get the crosshair on them.

It don't get much more portable than a Caldwell DeadShot Fieldpod ... just sayin'.

That Fieldpod looks like a good choice for use at home outside, too. I don't leave any gunnish items outside except one can hanging from a dead tree. Moving a heavy bin and other jerryrigged objects outside to check sight and scope adjustments is a PITA. The device's weight is OK for moving around while walking elsewhere, too.

It is handy... a 5gal bucket and a round cushion..( I use a Mossy Oak heat seat found at Walmart). The bucket is also great for carrying all you need.. targets, pellets, cold drink, the cushion and a buddy bottle if you wish.

I kept coming up with Sold Out or Discontinued labels for the Caldwell product. It looks like BOG might have acquired the design and is spinning off variants of it. Next time I go to a shooting goods store I'll look at what's there, just to get started on my search.

There was a comment about the Deadshot Fieldpod being flimsy. I don't need to support any heavy guns, but based on my experience with photographic tripods and heads, flimsy just isn't worth lighter weight or less expensive.

If you have a local Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop, check them. They may not have them listed online but there might be one on the shelf.
But you are right... the one BOG sells looks alot like it.

Mine is the Caldwell brand but I bought it used a few years back.
