RayK and Tri-5-ron,
Yep, I knew it was an old thread, but as you correctly identified, I'm mining for information. There's a ton of good stuff on the forum, and it's already saved me some trouble. I prefer to get the research in ahead of the hands-on work, and I'm happy to learn from other shooters' experiences.
I prefer the tuning option, and am working on that. I've got my HP tank and fill assy from Joe Brancato, so I have plenty of fresh air to run a ton of test shot strings. Also have a variety of different pellets to check for ultimate accuracy, once I've figured out where the real power band is. And I have the CED M2 chrono that I use for my powder burners.
I have benefitted already from getting the synrod, so I've got the built-in depinger. On the other hand, I have noticed the series of burps after the shot, so now (thanks to your fine description) I have a great way forward to address it.
The way I see it, I'm best off tuning the gun to refine the shooting cycle as much as possible based on its existing, stock, condition. I can't leave anything alone (according to my wife), so I'll probably end up with an HDD for testing and comparison at the very least. I expect that if I can tune the synrod sufficiently I'll find the HDD will add little, if anything, to the performance of the gun.
Somewhat related - I'm finding that it's difficult to get my comment count up - most of the questions or comments I have are already here someplace, so when I use the search function I find that I have almost nothing to add. Because of that I tend to lurk more than participate, but that's a fine testament to the rest of the shooters on the forum.
Thanks for your recommendations

Finally got the chance to throw some lead over the chrono this afternoon, and made some adjustments to the synrod.
Opened up the power adjustment screw 4 full turns from closed.
Messed around with the striker tension and stroke length, but don't have those numbers at the moment. I think I'll fiddle with stroke length tomorrow to see if I can get a couple more shots on the string.
I wanted a 3000 psi start point, a 1800-1900 psi end point (actual end pressure was ~1875), and somewhere around 930 fps on my bulk-use pellets (Crosman premier hollow point in the tin - cheap stuff, but works well for grunt work like this). I decided to be happy with a range of +/- 18 fps
Here are the results:
1 ) 913.2 -8.2
2 ) 922.6 1.2
3 ) 920.9 -0.5
4 ) 927.8 6.4

Looks like 3000 psi may be just a touch high for the first shot, but it's close enough that it's probably not worth spending an inordinate amount of time to adjust it out. Velocity creeps up between shot 2 and shot 19. Then it's not till shot 35 and 36 that I start getting concerned about excessive vertical stringing.
I don't feel like I'm wasting a lot of air at this point, and I'm achieving the velocity range I desired. I acknowledge that I'm starting at a higher fill pressure than the AoA article to which I referred in an earlier post (3000 v. 2650) - and I understand that will give me more shots at a higher velocity - but even so it seems I've managed to match much of the stated performance enhancements of an HDD.
Thanks for your input on the HDDs, and for the encouragement to try tuning first. I think after this (my first!) successful tuning session with the synrod I will be content to forego the HDD.
Side note: I appear to be one of the lucky ones to have received a synrod with an accurate gauge. 3000 psi on the Joe B outlet pressure gauge locks in at right at 3000 psi on the Marauder pressure gauge.
Next up (in the appropriate thread) 10m accuracy testing and pellet selection! Let's see what this baby likes to eat . . .
