I just got this Crosman 140 and I'm a little confused about what keeps the front sight from flopping left and right. It is loose on the front sight assembly. Since the barrel goes through the front sight, the barrel flops around. Can the front sight be removed from the assembly? The aluminum piece in front of the assembly appears to be peened against the sight. I believe that this Crosman 140 is a second variant 1954-1957. Thanks, Al

Is the problem that the steel "8" on the front rotates (in spite of the peening)? My 1400 had that problem, but my whole assembly is steel, so I just tack-welded it and called it done. You could try "repeening," or maybe some glue?
With any fix you try (assuming this is your problem), make certain you center the barrel. My first attempt to fix ended up with the muzzle being pulled to the left, because I didn't center the "8" while installed on the gun...minor mistake and easily fixed. Best of luck, these are great guns!

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering what was supposed to keep the sight tight on the assembly. I appears that the four aluminum prongs could be peened tighter but I don't won't to ruin it if that was not it's intended purpose. Thanks, Al

As I said, mine is different (newer 1400 vs. older 140), so I can't say if your barrel support/pump arm block is as originally intended, but it looks like there is a "lip" of aluminum sticking out a bit, aside from where it's already peened. Seems like you could peen/fold over the entire lip?

I had a 2nd variant 140 with a similar problem. Yes, peening is the answer. Ensure you have it straight up, and then use a cold chishel to tighten the aluminum post to secure the steel ring.
I gave that 140 to my son-in-law after my younger brother let me know that he had been keeping the 140 (3rd var.) from our youth in his gun safe for 40 odd years. I now have that gun and restored it to look as well as it shoots.
