New Big Cat .22 - poor accuracy
«

Just purchased a big cat 1200 .22. I am having trouble getting it sited in..... I'm not saying alot of it is not me as I am new to these spring air rifles (these things shoot alot harder than I expected!).
Questions: Should I have cleaned the bore before I started to site it in? Is the stock scope really as bad as I have read... and I just need to try another scope?
My other air rifle is the Benjamin Nitro XL (with a tuna trigger..verrry nice...thankyou again). This gun seemed to take about 100 rounds before it settled down. Should I expect the same number of rounds with the Gamo?

Welcome!
Yes, clean it with GOO GONE. Lok-tite the stock screws with blue lok-tite. Try several different kinds of pellets. You should run a few tins of pellets through it to break it in. If needed, you can always upgrade the scope.

It took mine around 400 shots or so to settle in. Like Vinny said, check the stock screws and clean the barrel well the first time. Give it a few hundred shots for the lead to fill in imperfections in the barrel and also, if you're using the stock Gamo scope and stock 2pc mounts (even with set screw), try and make those your first upgrades (one piece mount and springer rated scope). If it's a metal trigger, get the GRT as well.

Luckily all my airguns took less than 100 or so shots before they settled down. But shoot 200 or more and try different pellets (Usually the dome ones work best) to see if it settles down. Check and tighten all bolts (Don't tighten the trigger adjustment screws....someone on another forum did that and his air rifle wouldn't catch while he was co cking it) and use a pencil to mark the scope and scope mount to see if they're moving.
And always hold the air rifle the same....at the same spot and use the same among of pressure (Usually a light grip works best)...let the air rifle "Jump" naturally.

The brothers have some good advice and it may take trying several different types of pellet's and some rounds of lead through to get her to settle down with what she likes. I Turbo Tuned my Whisper and it took trying 5 different types of pellet's and almost two tins to get her shooting spot on. Ed

thanks all for your comments and help. I'll clean it and keep shooting. any recommendations on pellet types to try? I've been shooting the crosman premier hollow points. I have read about having to find a pellet brand that suits your rifle... is that unique to every rifle or unique to a specific brand and model of rifle?

yes, every AG will like a certain pellet. The CPHP's are fine while you are breaking in your AG. Put a tin or two thru the Cat, then look for a pellet it likes. There is no need to shoot the more expensive pellets to break in your Cat. When the time comes, try the H&N FTT and if you hunt try the Predators. All of my AG's like these two pellets

The most accurate ones I have found in my .22 BC have been the Crosman Premier Boxed but they are expensive so I leave them for hunting or to see if my zero has changed. I just recently picked up the Gamo sampler pack at Dicks Sporting Goods but have not tried them yet as I don't get to shoot that often.

That's what you get with a "Package" scope....sometimes it lasts a long time (A few of mine's lasted over a 1000 shots) and some broke in under 500. And some other customers' have their scope broke in under 10 shots....like you.
