Thanks Bob. The 74 shot string was certainly proof your idea works. I thought something had to be wrong when I got to shot 40 or 50. I kept checking the chronograph and the pressure gauge thinking this is not possible. It's like driving my car 1,000 miles and still having 1/2 tank of gas.
Gonna make one for my regulated Disco. Also gonna add .020" preload to the 74 shot configuration and try that before I make more springs.
Thanks Again Bob
==============================
Hey Artie
This thing really needs to be tested more. A couple of the parts hit each other pretty hard, and I don't know how long they will last. Do you have a chronograph? If your willing to shoot the snot out of it and post the results, I'll send you a freebie.
I have some hardened steel that is about 40 Rockwell. I can get some that is around 35 Rockwell. Some of the parts in the SSG are not hardened and work fine. They have a Rockwell Hardness Tester at my job. I need to test some material there.
It will be a week or two before I have one for you Artie. What pressure do you fill to and how many FPE are you looking for? Thanks for the interest.

No problem Steve, I'd love to provide my Discovery as a test bed. I need to reseal my Disco, been fooling with springers lately. I can do that in the mean time as seals are on hand.. My Disco is one of the first generations BTW, and is pretty much stock. I've been wanting to fool around with an SSG since first reading about them. One reason I don't shoot it more often is shot count.
I consider your offer generous and will gladly pay any associated costs and then some.. I do have a Chronograph. I fill to 1900, much above and I get locked. Not to concerned about fpe, shot count is what I'm after (700 +?)
Thanks much and pm me anytime, Ric

Some Of the parts are done Artie. I made a few spares when I made my SSG. Making the second one is a whole lot faster than the first. Before you know it, you'll be spending $50 a week on pellets. Be nice to get your feedback.
Thanks Artie

Hey feedback is easy, I've got ramblings all over this board. A new SSG is just what I need to relight the Disco fever so I'll be glad to contribute what I can. I said the Disco was stock but forgot about the power adjuster I made for it. Removing that will be easy enough.

I made 2 more SSGs. One for Ric/Artie in North Carolina and one for my regulated 177 Disco. Right now I can only fill to 1850 PSI, whereas the old shot string for the 177 without the SSG had a 2000PSI fill. Kind of inconclusive and I can't even speculate how many more shots I would get from a 2000PSI fill with the SSG, but it is promising. Gonna bring yours to UPS tomorrow Ric.
Before I made the SSG spring for the regulated 177, I checked the spring that came with the gun. I knew it was very light, but I was surprised it was only 3.5 LBS. I made a 3 inch long spring from .035" wire (smallest wire I have) and set the lathe for 12 TPI. The springs I made for the 22 Discos were made with the lathe set for 9TPI. Less space between coils gives you a weaker spring, which is what I needed. The first spring I made today gave me what I wanted. Nice when things work out. It makes up for the ordeal of tapping the hardened lock nuts. Well, not really. Insert curse words here #%&$@ *&@$#
Here is the pre SSG shot string, 7.87 JSB, 2000PSI fill, 1 foot from chrony

Tonight with the SSG I got nine more shots, the SSG gun is shooting slightly hotter, and I started with 1850 PSI rather than 2000PSI. Inconclusive, but that's all I got. And now I'm out of 7.87 JSB.
Here is tonights string, 1850PSI fill, 7.87JSB, I foot from chrony, .025" SSG gap. This gun has no pressure gauge, the regulator takes it's place. I have a large seemingly decent quality gauge on the Scuba tank though.

I have truly enjoyed reading the long thread, and this one.
I have a Maximus that I have been working on.
It is a .22 which I have opened the Valve Port, TP, Barrel Port, (These to the recommended specs from Mr. Bob), and threw an HUMA Reg in set to apx. 1875.
I also lightened the hammer, (Too Much, LOL!!!), and awaiting a Challenger hammer from Joseph of Discos-R-Us. Which I believe will be a bit easier on the sear of the M-Rod Trigger I installed. Also from Discos-R-Us. Seeing a drop in fpe and fps with the lighter hammer. I did go too far no doubt.
A BNM Multi Breach should be here in a few weeks. (Shooting pest, and reloading quickly at night is a real issue for me, and many times there are multiple pest in the yard at once).
I've been playing with different springs, and am enjoying the results. The Gun is a true laser with the 18.1 JSB's and is doing a fine job pesting here on the place. Central Texas has a lot of pesky vermin!!! Grrrrr!!!
Steve, if you are so inclined, I would very much like to get one of these SSG's from you. I have two end caps, One adjustable, and one factory non-adjustable. I can size the factory any size needed for the rod/ thread to pass thru.
More than happy to pay for your time and trouble.
Keep up the good work and testing!!!

Hey Michael,
Glad you like the Maximus. I'm pretty sure the Disco SSG I make won't fit a Maximus. I don't have a Maximus, so I don't know for sure. I think the striker stroke is shorter than a Disco. There may be other differences, but I don't know that either.
What I'm doing Michael, is trying to make the Disco SSG work with the stock hammer. The length of the spring rod, the length of the aluminium housing (replaces stock end cap) and the length of the spring, are sized to work in the Disco.
The spring rod and spring are over 3 inches long. That's why my housing/end cap is so long. And the length of the threaded brass adjuster, and depth of the hole in the threaded brass adjuster, all work together.
I really can't sell these just yet, if at all. I have no idea how long they will last. I would need to get the ok from Bob too.
If you had a stock Disco, with a stock hammer, and could do some testing, sure I could send you a freebie, because I know it will fit and work without any modifications.
The Maximus and the Disco are very similar in some ways, but I think they are different enough to not be able to swap parts.
I want to send you one. It is pretty adjustable as far as lengths are concerned. It would be a week or two anyhow. How about we think about it a little. Can you see by my crummy pictures how it works?
I appreciate the interest, can you even go outside to shoot in the Texas heat?
Thanks Again
Steve

LOL!!! Early Morning, and after the sun goes down. One light on the target, and one on the gun. + A good black light to find all the darned Bark Scorpions before they find me!
I understand the cocking length is apx 3/16" shorter. I'll check with Joseph at DRU to make sure. This is why I said I would not need the rear cap. I can adjust the preload and gap whether it is for Disco or Max. Only needs screw long enough to exit cap of disco apx 1/2" and I can shorten as needed.
Hammer is identical, as is the endcap and breach. Only real differences other than stock and slightly longer bbl. is the valve uses a smaller dia. Poppet pin, (More MRod style) and the holes that screw holes in the tube/ valve are in a different place. Which of course, has nothing to do with the hammer/ endcap.
In fact, i have purchased several Disco springs, and shortened them enough to prevent coil bind. That is all.
Woo-Hoo!!!

Michael,
The aluminum body that replaces the stock end cap, is a necessary part. All the other parts function around it. It holds everything firmly in position. It's long because I use a long spring and a long spring rod. That's why it cocks easily, but still hits the valve hard enough to make decent power.
The Disco SSG I make needs to be tested as it is, unmodified, in a Disco with a stock hammer. Having parts of it cut down or replaced will change the way it works.
The Maximus striker, pressure tube ID and maybe stock end cap are the same as the Disco I believe, but I'm not sure. The SSG I have might only need to be modified slightly to work in a Maximus, so that might happen in the future. Right now I'm focused on the Disco.
If you would like a .186" diameter spring rod, that you can thread and cut to a length that suits you, sure I can do that. Got a few out in the garage right now. I think I have 9 or 10. It's made of O-1 drill rod and has a .312" diameter head that fits in the hole in the striker.

Steve, that makes perfect sense, and I more understand what you are doing.
Yes, I could indeed use the rod, but only if it is not too much trouble. Time and effort and all.
If you do have time, and can, I will pm my mailing address. If not, not to worry, as you have given me some great ideas! Kept waking up last night thinking about it. (Which left me too worn out to do a thing about it today. Grrrr!!!)

No trouble at all Mike. I'll put the rod in a plastic tube and put it in a heavy envelope. I just made some springs tonight, I can stuff in a few of those too.

Thank You-Thank You!
Even though I live next to the largest military base in the free world, there is NOTHING available in the way as machine supplies. There is not so much as a small machine shop. Guss it is because it is an Army Base. (Tanks mostly).
Years ago, I lived in Huntsville Ala., Just down the road a bit from the Marshal Space Flight Center where they built the Space Shuttles. You couldn't count the many, and differing types of machine shops and companies! Anything you could dream of, and many No One had dreamt of, Not yet, back then anyway. LOL!!!
Thank You So Much. I will PM an Address.

P.S. Please let me know what I owe you!

The other day I made 3 springs for Ric's SSG and I took some test shots at around 1500PSI. The 12LB spring shot 24FPE. The 9LB 12oz spring shot 18FPE and the 7LB 10oz spring shot 12FPE. These shots were with the thinnest shim behind all the springs. Adding .050" or .100" in shims (or spacers if you like) would increase the power quite a bit.
But.... I had been thinking, instead of shimming a short spring to get the preload I want, it would be better to just have a longer spring. I have more active coils that way. All the previous springs were 3 inches long. I made the 4th spring 3.200" it measured 8 LBS on my fancy $16 digital scale.
All I have in my SCUBA tank is 1760 PSI. I filled the gun and went into the cellar to blast the rubber mulch again. I have nothing but good to say about the Pro Chrono. Not sure if that's the name, it's white. I shot thousands of rounds and have not had one error. The light kit was worth the money too. I shoot anytime, rain or shine.
Tonight I got 50 shots from a 1760 PSI fill with the latest spring. Ric said he shot crosman pellets, so that's what I used for this test. He also said he was more interested in shot count than power.
Here is the string.

Ric, if you fill higher than 1760 PSI, and your first 10 or so shots are too slow, you can remove the .100" spacer and install the .150" spacer. If that's too big of a change, instead you can move the 2 locknuts I told you about. If you turn the locknuts 1 revolution, they move .030" If you want, you can turn the locknuts half a revolution and they will move .015"
If I get this thing to UPS tomorrow or even Wednesday, you might have it by Saturday.
That's it.

Fabulous Steve, can't wait. As you may recall, I'm getting valve lock over 1900 anyway and shot count is exactly what I'm after. Sounds like your SSG is going to be a winner.
I have wondered why there are no commercial SSG's available for the Disco, at least none that I'm aware of. If there was I would have purchased one long ago. It would be so nice to pick up the Discovery and target shoot without reaching for the tank or pump every 15-20 rounds if that.
Whether you have a commercial interest or are purely a hobbiest, I admire your dedication and problem solving ability.

Thank You Ric,
I just dropped off your package at UPS. They said you should have it Friday. Can't wait to hear what you think of it after you use it. I think it should last a while. Time will tell.
I don't know how many Discos have been sold. I read that Crosman sold millions of the cheap 760 rifles, and I believe I read 25,000 Mrods. Haven't seen any sales numbers on the Disco though. Been making them almost 10 years.
It's pretty easy to either lose money making this stuff, or end up working for almost nothing. There are some threads here that don't end well. Time, material, tooling, shipping, heat, electric etc.
I left the SSG set up just as it was in the 50 shot string. You just have to pop it in and set the gap with the brass adjuster. You screw in the brass adjuster with the spring rod assembly inside it using your fingers, no tools needed. Stop when you feel resistance (that's when you contact the valve) then back out 1/2 turn. Lightly lock the black nut. Done.
And Mike, I'll send your stuff out Saturday. The post office closes before I can get there during the week and UPS is too expensive.

Great Steve, sounds straight forward enough for this old guy. That is the downside to smithing these air rifles, got to have a market large enough to justify the time and effort. I look forward to testing it out and will be resealing the Disco in the mean time.

You don't owe me anything Mike, It's just a few springs and a piece of drill rod. Thanks for asking though.
