Ruger Blackhawk .177

I bought this refurbished Ruger Blackhawk .177 rifle from airgunsdaily.com. Opened the double box and removed the rifle. Making the preliminary once over the rifle would have been guessed to be new from the factory except for the "R" stamped on the breech and cylinder. There were some minor scuffs on the back of the stock but not bad.
Having spent a lot of time behind the trigger of my Benji XLs, I was pleasantly surprised at the very light weight of this rifle. So I guess the almost 4lbs difference is REALLY noticable. Without the scope it seemed to be a bit front heavy, might have been my imagination though.
The 4x32 Ruger scope was wrapped and boxed with the rings already firmly attached.
I removed the scope from the box and attached to the dovetail and tightened. There is a scope stop at the end of the dovetail also. I've only had about 50% success with scope stops surviving on a magnum springer. This one is rated at 1000fps but I imagine this is pumped up by using alloy ammo, something I would not recommend.
After attaching the scope, I placed my target backstop out to 30 yards and added some fresh Dirty Bird and Shoot-N-C targets. It took 4-5 rounds to get it in the 10 ring but after that, it was solid. My eyes aren't the best and I generally need more magnification from my scopes, like 6X or higher. But with this scope, the gun was balanced out and still quite light. That actually made it easier to keep on target. I used CPHP (7.9gr) ammo to zero and test the gun.
The safety is a thumb type, making it ambi. I like a thumb safety, that way I am not moving my trigger finger around a lot. The effort to cock this gun is rated at 30lbs which is very reasonable for a magnum springer. The trigger will need some work, possibly polishing and lubing. It felt like a 6 stage trigger before it finally released. With the trigger smoothed out some, I think this gun will become an even MORE accurate piece than it is out of the box.
The firing cycle impressed me. There is a a bit of recoil but there didn't seem to be much twist and no "twang" from the spring. There was also no dieseling, smoke or sonic boom. The firing cycle was FAR smoother and quiter than I could have imagined.
Not counting the trigger, the gun felt like it had been tuned already. I can't wait to actually tear into it and refine the trigger and service the internals. It should really be a keeper.
I did not have enough time to put it across the chrony but it felt and sounded like it is performing some very good numbers. I'll post those as soon as I get time.
For a starter gun or a light weight/well balanced FUN shooter, I highly recommend this gun. After I get the numbers I will know whether to recommend it for hunting or not. But from the target below, you can see it is capable of good accuracy right out of the box. The first shots were to the left of center. I walked it in and was able to lay several shots into the 10 ring at 30 yards. And hunting is more about shot placement than massive power.
Buy it and enjoy it!!!!
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

WOW....just finished putting a 10 string across the chrony. Straight from the box, no maintenance or tuning, this gun is awesome. Shooting CPHP 7.9gr, it had a low of 962.54fps (16.24fpe) and a high of 979.68fps (16.83fpe). That gave a spread of only 17.14 and standard of 6.48. THOSE are good numbers in my book. A little tuning and lube might tighten up the spread a little but I'm happy with these numbers as is. I can't fight the urge to open it up to see how the internals look and if there's any improvements I can make.
EXCELLENT gun, especially for the price!!!!
Now I'm off to enjoy putting a few rounds downrange and I pity the tree rat that comes within 50 yards of my fun shoot today.
Happy Shooting!!!!

A very good gun when it is tuned I have a blackhawk to and actually send my rws 350 and black hawk to ed for a tune he said other than the 350 having more bigger internals there about the same which proves the point the ruger is a rws34 clone I have a tuned one with a military woodland camo with a leapers bugbuster 3x9x32 sweet rifle

Dave just think what a good tune would do to that baby...
Get with it and do a seal, debur and lube tune. Polish up the seer shaft and clean trigger assy. out while you are in there...
Great choice of guns to purchase bro.

Those Blackhawks can be fine shooters for sure. Mine, right from the box, was fantastic. Congrats on the new shooter..

Hmmm, I put a couple of hundred pellets through mine before I had a chance to put it to the chrono and I found it to yield around 890 fps with CPHP's. Seems a little slow compared to some here but I don't (and won't...) hunt with it so that really doesn't bother me. I can say that so far, I'm shooting better with this gun than I am with my Trail NP.
My biggest problem so far is that all the screws loosen up after 4 or 5 shots. I am waiting until I get the chance to tear it down, debur and lube it before Loctiting everything though. Any advice or tips in the tuning dept for this gun would be greatly appreciated.
compressedair, whatcha got stuck on the end of the barrel? I am trying to decide if I want to put a better scope on this gun or a peep sight. If I go with a scope, I will definitely be using an offset mount and will be removing the open sights as you have. I was looking at the muzzle brake for the RWS 34P, available from PA, is that what you have on there? Also, did you use anything to fill the screw holes left by the rear sight?

Spook,,,It's the Beeman muzzlebrake also avail at P.A.
Psychologically, it did wonders.
Used some old firearm plug screws for the holes that happened to fit,,, but black crayon wud worked just as well.
Scope wise, a Simmons .22 4x rimfire has held up well except for the plastic horizontal adjust nob cracking and breaking off.
I've never done an actual accuracy test with the Nasty...if winter ever leaves, it will be fun to see what she/I can do.
