The
Athlon Helos Gen. 2
2-12x42
FFP IR offers some exceptional specs. 👍🏼
It's brand new, and last night I got around to adding it to one of my
Scope Specs Tables
.
And the Athlon's specs
look really good
in comparison!! 👍🏼
🔶 This particular Scope Specs Table is to help select a SHORT/light scope, for short to mid range shooting, mounted on a pistol, bullpup, or light hunting rifle. Therefore, the requirements to make it onto the table are as follows:
▪
3x
magnification on the bottom end (or less, for a wide FoV for quick close range stalking shots)
▪between
9x and 12x
on the top end (can be more if the scope is shorter than 13"=33cm)
▪
10y min.
side
parallax
▪
Holdoff
reticle (no BDC)
▪
Exposed
turrets
▪Around
$500
or less
🔶 So, the Athlon makes a good case against the other 40+ scopes in that Specs Table:
▪It has a huuuuuge
field of view of 56ft
at 2x!
▪It is the only scope with a
zero stop
*
▪It is the only scope with
10mil (25moa)
turrets — very nice for dialers like me — no more wondering on what revolution of the turret I am currently…. They are
locking
turrets, too, good for the woods walk.
▪It has a vaaaaast elevation adjustment range of
32mil
(c. 105moa) (and 25mil windage [c. 85moa]).
➔ [For fun, I could dial the elevation for my sub12FPE PP700 shooting the JSB 34gr Beast out to over 70 yards. No holdover required...! 😄]
▪It's
illuminated
, half of the scopes in the table are not.
▪For those quick shots at low magnification it has a
circle of death
— no other scope of the 150 scopes on my 3 Specs Tables offers this!
➔ Great feature for an FFP scope, esp. for one with such a large (6-fold) magnification range.
▪The length of
11.8"
(30cm) isn't
super compact
in comparison to some of the scopes with "compact" in their model designations that are sporting 10" (25cm) or so. But it could still ride on my PP700.
▪The weight of
25.4oz
(720g) isn't
featherlight
like some "compacts" coming in around 19oz (550g), but it's light.
⚠️ Something I almost missed, but is important:
The MIL reticle is a
holdoff reticle,
with
evenly
spaced hash lines.
The MOA reticle on the other hand is a
bullet drop compensation reticle
(BDC), where the hash lines are spaced
unevenly according to the required holdovers
of particular
PB cartridges
at 100 yards, 200, 300, etc.
Prices
$625 MSRP
$500 typical price
$450 lowerst I saw it for yesterday
I want one!! The MIL version!! 😄
Matthias
*I might have missed a couple, but a zero stop sure is a very rare and
very nice
feature in this magnification range and price range
PS:
steve123 has one and wrote a
review of it

25 oz. is extremely heavy for a scope that only goes to 12X.
6 time magnification is what makes it so heavy. Usually optics suffer when you have such a large range of magnification.
May be a good scope?

Yes, Yogi, you are right 👍🏼 – for a 12x this is rather heavy.
But it’s the
amazing 6-fold magnification range
that adds some weight.
And that magnification range, well, that is exceptional with a 12x at the top end. And there is really hardly any competition to compare it to, that’s how
exceptional
it is!
The Swampfox Kentucky Long 2-12x44 FFP weighs just about the same (24oz).
Then there are two that have a higher top end magnification:
UTG: Accushot T8 Tactical: w/ MOA Ret. (No. SCP3-216UMOA) 2-16x44 SFP
Nikko Stirling: C-More X10 [discontinued, but still sold in some places] 2-20x44 SFP
These would be great scopes for someone who wants
a very wide field of view
(FoV), and at the same time still wants to get a significantly
high top end magnification
for taking shots further out. They’re not quite LPVO’s, but they kind of bridge the gap.
🔶 Other scopes besides those above can give you that extra wide FoV as well, and they achieve it not by lowering the bottom end magnification, but by increasing the FoV by other means. Those would be:
Hawke: Airmax 30 Touch (No. 13260) 3-12x32 SFP
Hawke: Airmax 30 SF Compact (No. 13200) 3-12x44 SFP
MTC: Viper Connect: w/ SCB2 Reticle: 3-12x32 SFP
MTC: Viper Connect: w/ SCB2 Reticle: 3-12x24 SFP
You notice that – apart from the Athlon Helos and the Swampfox Kentucky – these are all
SPF
. I personally prefer
FFP
so that my holdovers are always the same, no matter what magnification I choose.
Scopes are so much fun! 😊

Right, but at 2X the reticle is tiny.
Who shoots at 2X?
Even at 10 yards, 4X works great for me at least....

Been looking at scopes lately, thanks for your timely and as usual highly detailed analyses on these scopes. Thanks Matthias!
