Paper Target Holders and Reactive Targets for Free

I picked up a free length of black steel fencing locally from craig's list to repurpose into paper target holders for airgun practice.
I am pretty much limited to hand tools, but I am handy and fond of DIY projects although most of my previous experience is with carpentry, woodworking, and masonry. I have almost no experience with metalwork and I do not have access to a welder. So I tried to see whether I could make some semi-durable targets with what I had on hand, specifically an angle grinder, a drill, steel wire, spare nuts/bolts, and about 2ft of a garage door opener rail that I had left over.
I ended up taking a roughly 6ft wide by 5ft tall length of black steel fencing (similar to
this
) for free and turning it into six paper target holder stakes and four reactive steel targets. Almost all of the project was just practice using the angle grinder.
I started by cutting two verticals off in a V near the bottom rail for each of 5 rough paper target holders, and then cutting the top rail to separate them (the V made sort of a spike right away but I would cut straight across if doing it again, the V was too much work for the result). You can see the leftover half of the fence here and a stack of rough paper target holders after I had cut them apart, with each having two stakes and an open space between them where a vertical has been removed.
The paper target holders were nearly finished already, all I needed to do to make them functional was to grind in two gaps to the top rail, drill two holes in the verticals and string some steel wire between them, and then they were ready to hold Letter sized printed paper targets. You can see a refined paper target holder from the front and top, and one in use while testing out a new rifle (the poor grouping is exploratory, but still probably mostly new shooter error).
To get as much use out of the fencing as possible, I decided to see if I could also make some reactive steel target stakes with the remaining half of the fencing. I cut out and finished an additional paper target holder stake, leaving me with four verticals, each with a generous amount of toprail still attached. After cutting the excess toprail off, I was able to bolt together and grind out some reactive steel target shapes. You can see the prep work for the reactive target stakes and a close up of some target options before shaping.
To keep with using just the grinder, I decided to carve a hanger out of the existing toprail of a couple of stakes, which threads through a hole drilled in the target and seems to hang well. I haven't yet tested any of the reactive targets but hopefully they'll hold up a little while against airgun fire.

Way to go, Colin. Free & repurposed is what I like to do too.

Nice job on the target holders and reactive targets Colin using the tools you have on hand.
Like John, I like to repurpose or design targets or target holders from free or discarded items.
Happy shooting,
Dan
