Below is the last review I completed over the past 2 weeks of the Retay 135x .22 This review is for Retay's Engineering Team as input for a redesign of their Air Rifles to be reintroduced at the Shot Show 2017.
Firearm Review Retay 135X
First impression:
Rifle has clean lines with chrome details on the butt stock and the bottom of the grip. Finish feels sticky and easy to scuff as a spot was removed with thumb nail effort.
Picatinny rail useful item well suited for most all optic adaption.
Several areas of material flash on stock with the tan color is very noticeable.
Front pin site is colored red, with the rear site aperture colored green (a good combo for open site shooting for ease of target alignment.
Cheek stock is adjustable for shooter; the cheek pad is cut for right handed shooter. I personally prefer a round pad with no cut from factory. (Left Handed Shooter)
Butt stock has no adjustment for pull length for taller shooters, cap cut to fit a RH shooter, not a show stopper just an observation.
Thumb hole stock is comfortable for left and right hand shooter, grip is good soft feel easy griping.
Sling mount on rear of butt would be useful, an addition of a bi-pod mount would be a helpful addition.
Users Manual is lacking in detail, very vague.
Operational Review:
Barrel break a little stiff but later worked in to be normal with similar 22 Cal Springers. Barrel rubs on guide through stock leaving some marking on the barrel and stock.
Cycling to cock is more than 120 degrees, a little deep but workable, Bear Trap mechanism is a plus button release is well adapted.
Trigger not a 2 stage, safety button operation hindered for a RH shooter requiring a two hand release, LH shooter ease to release safety. Button is obstructed by trigger surround.
Trigger is in need of an upgrade, unable to get a straight pull, tends to walk to the side during squeeze, difficult to determine trigger break. Small adjustment possible but feels cheap and movement is beyond any serious shooters preference. (Would need to be replaced or overhauled before any serious shooting)
Range Trials:
Pellets used Gamo TS-22 Long Distance 22 gr / Crossman Target Premium 15.3 gr
Db level well above that need to shoot or hunt without hearing protection.
Open site grouping w/ Crossman 15.3 gr 25 ft. three shot group average 0.73in 5 / 3 shot groups. Gamo TS-22 22 gr groupings .69in 5 / 3 shot groups. Rear site adjustment is not fine enough to do accurate adjustment but able to hit intermediate targets with some accuracy.
Added Pronghorn 3-9 x 30 scope 25 yard shot patterns
Longer Range Trials:
Crossman 14.3 gr could not improve much from the 0.73 groups as I found that the lighter pellet was not well suited for the rifles power and speed. Managed 0.66in groups at 25 yards.
Gamo TS-22 22gr performed very well 25 yards groups .31in groups with one of 5 groups sub 0.24in. Out to 35 yards little drift or drop affect pellet impact the added 10 yards groups fell off to .43in groups.
150 shot overall fired no mechanism issues identified, rifle was tight and once the barrel was warm groups were consistent and predictable.
Summary:
Rifle performance was good, sturdy feel structure was tight with no loose feeling during firing.
Suppressor is a needed add-on.
Trigger needs a serious upgrade, one item that would be a deal breaker for me personally on a purchase.
Open sites mounted to the barrel are good, and they are rugged and sturdy.
Rail for permanent use would need to be lock-tite to reduce screw back out (not sure if I ensured the screws were secure before mounting scope)
Grips and forearm were comfortable during shooting in warm and cooler weather, a little slick in damp light rain conditions.
