Title: Adding "GUN VS MODE" to the target match here?
Post by: dukja on November 28, 2016, 10:56:38 AM
I just participated the 1st 10m off hand off season match, and it was fun.  Although my arm really hurts of shooting a lot and my score is not worthy of mentioning (interestingly the forum or my browser changes words to "not worthy", so I have to change my sentence with it).   :D

Currently, one entry per person is allowed. I wonder if it is a fun idea to allow such a "gun vs mode" in the match:  each person is now allow to enter two scores with two different rifles he/she owns.  In this case, we may have a chance to see what an important role a rifle plays with the same shooter.  (I would love to see Challenger vs AA T200 vs detuned Marauder, etc.) This may be fun to de-mythify (or further mythify) the common beliefs about different guns.

Just a 2-cent idea.

I have no issue with that.

I can tell you from shooting competition for many years.

If you give a top notch shooter a decent, accurate gun, his scores won't drop much.

But if you give a so so shooter a match race gun, his scores won't go up much.

I have seen it many times.

Thanks a lot for sharing the experience.

It seems that there is no point of doing "vs mode".  And I probably should return the new gun I just ordered.   ;) :P

I wouldn't do that, I am just saying that you can give a good shooter 2 guns, a race gun, and a decent accurate gun, and his scores wouldn't be too different.

Always get a gun that is more accurate than you, so you KNOW that if it's a miss, it's not the equipment.

I am being mean there.

A wise man once said only accurate guns are interesting.

Why would you shoot a inaccurate gun in a match.

These matches are pretty much ongoing. Shoot one for one match and then the other in the next match. All you have to do then is compare the two scores ;D 8)

I was just kidding.  Although I am 95% agree with Ian's previous statement and I don't think at non-Olympic level gun will matter much.  Still, it may be some interesting psychological and ergonomical reasons that you just love and shoot a certain gun better than the other.  Overall, these vs results may convince us that we need (or not need) another new gun.   ;D   For me, I am always interested to read who used what gun to achieve certain score in the result.

At 10m, you might experiment with comparing a quality aperture sight with a scope - I will bet you are surprised at how close the scores are. (My shooting is "not worthy" with either.)   ::)

In the 5 meter offhand matches, I consistently score 145-147 out of 150, one handed open sights with a vintage crosman Mk2 in .177.
It's got a decent barrel, and an excellent trigger, and the sights are good.

And to me, it just FEELS right in the hand.

IN THE 2 handed entry, I use a modified crosman 1740 (a2240 with a 10 inch walther barrel) with a 3moa red dot.
I consistently run 147-148, but did squeeze a perfect 150 score once in the last match.

The 1740 just isn't as comfortable to shoot one handed, and the Mk2 isn't as comfortable to shoot 2 handed.

My score with the Mk2 actually drops a couple of points when I use 2 hands. (Go figure)

I shot a 10 Meter target today with my CZ200(PCP) and came out with a mediocre score.  Then I shot another 10M target with my HW98(springer)just for a comparison.. The results surprised me.... they were exactly the same, even the X count. The score was 1 point higher than I've ever shot with a springer in this match which is surprising because  I'm not a good shot with a springer. A lot of luck and coincidence must have come into play.  I'm going to try another target with the HW to see what happens :D

Edit.... dropped 3 points on the next target with the 98.

Marty and Ian:  thanks a lot for the reports.  You guys must have good consistency in your gear and score.  In my case, my 880 and 853 have quite difference in weight and trigger (also 880 is less consistent than 853).  And I didn't shoot enough to produce two score sheets for both rifles yet.  :-[

I am waiting for my Challenger to come and will report back (much later due to busy schedule) when I have chance to know the Challenger.  ;)

I used to live in Colorado Springs, and belonged to the shooting club at the Olympic Training Center.

I got to meet and shoot with many very fine shooters who were always ready to help and share their knowledge.

The 853 will shoot better than the 880, as it has a Lothar Walther barrel on it. And it's a entry level 10 meter match gun.

I have cleaned and resealed guns for the local ROTC unit, and had them chrono with an extreme spread of only 4 or 5 fps across the 10 shot string.

On the 853 you can drop a trigger from a 888 in it, and improve it greatly.

Or you can modified it your self if you are mechanically inclined.

Ian:  Thanks a lot for your hint.  I have done the mod (both reduce sear height and pilkgun mod) and flip the 853 inside out several times.   ;D
