I do a thorough break in first. anywhere from 100 to 250 shots depending on the gun. Unless it's so bad out of the box that it screams for it.
I'm just curious about this. When I read posts from people who rebuild brand new guns I always wonder if the majority of shooters do this.I have stripped and rebuilt my guns only when they've had a problem. I have an HW50s on the way and plan to shoot it bone stock unless it has issues.
With respect to springers. I have bought many new springers over the years and have always just cleaned the barrel and shot it until I feel that it is mechanically sound. Then I tear it down for a lube, tune, and reseal. I have never seen a factory piston seal that was not damaged. But then again I am not blessed with the ability to afford high end guns so they may be a different beast.
Twang to me = nostalgia:) Especially my HW springers, I really enjoy it. My HWS carry lifetime warranty’s with Aoa if something happens I’m sending them in. If I don’t want twang I shoot my PCPs. It’s all personal preference.

Never thought about it that way but it does. A small amount of twang doesn't bother me at all. Now if it hurts my jaw, no! I can't take that much twang. When I started in this hobby the low end air rifles would definitely benefit from a tune early on. I was learning, I bought four or five refurbished air rifles and different members on here would walk me through the tuning needed to address specific problems. Different rifles required different things. I was taught if it ain't broke don't fix it. If I buy a new air rifle tomorrow, I would shoot it a bunch to allow it to break in. If I'm pleased with it, why tear it down? Now just about all I shoot are German made springers. Three were previously tuned before I acquired them. My new Diana 460 came with problems that Umarex failed to address but that's another story. The R9 that I bought new was tuned before it reached my hands.
