Cleat Coat Over Re-bluing
«

I have achieved some good results with cold bluing.
I can get the color nice, dark and even, even if the part has rust pits.
However, the pitting still remains....bluing can only do so much.
So, I am experimenting with spraying on some clear coating over the re-blued part, hoping to even out the pitting.
Anyone have experience with this??

You can lead a man to water, but you can't keep him from urinating in it.

Ron,
Simple answer; no; I have no experience with clear coat over cold blue.
General suggestions:
Try it on some other piece of pitted steel, before doing it to a prized possession. For one thing, adhesion needs to be confirmed. And that it provides the effect you are looking for.
Also suggest matte clear coat, rather than gloss, as it hides unevenness. Contrast that with gloss, that shows every ripple and imperfection. Also, matte would scatter light, rather than let you see into the imperfect blued surface.
You may need to use more than one coat, with light sanding to even it out.
How would you apply the clear coat? Spray, brush, roller, cotton swab? You will need to mask off the barrel bore to prevent the clear coat entering; and perhaps other areas, such as threaded holes.
If you provided pictures of the job perhaps you might get more well informed advice. I just use my imagination to fill in the unknowns.

I'm doin' a Crosman 2200 barrel shroud, so not exactly a family heirloom.
Bead blasted, then steel wool polished in the metal lathe.
3 rounds of JAX iron black; 3 rounds of Birchwood Perma Blue Paste.
Color nice...........
3 light coats of Rust-Oleum matte Crystal clear spray
I may need to do the sanding and respray deal to get it more better.......

After all was said and done, the clear spray changed the hue of the bluing.
Almost made it look bronzish.......
Maybe I shouldn't have sprayed it when it was raining
Anyway, I stripped the clear coat off, did another round of Perma Blue, oiled it and called it a day.
Much prettier, even with a few pits.......
Now I have added another item to the list of things NOT to do.

We learn more from apparent failure, than from instant success. Luck often masquerades as skill. Recovery from failure requires understanding and builds knowledge and skill.
Thanks for sharing your adventure, Ron.
