My wife found these at a yard sale for $1 each. They seem to be in great shape with no scratches on the hard wax grooves. Now I want to find out what the heck is on them as they don't really say on the boxes. Too bad the player was not there for a cheap price. Have any of you ever heard a wax cylinder recording play? Just found out they have one of the machines at the Edison House Museum in Louisville, Ky. Now I've got to find out if they will play one for me next time I'm in town there.

Those are fairly early Edison recording cylinders. They should fit the Edison Dictaphone (called an Ediphone voice writer) which could both record and play. Blank cylinders were available and they could be shaved and then reused if you wanted to record over them.

I will probably never have a machine to play them, but they do look cool in the curio cabinet with the other antique junk we have collected. It's hard to believe the advances in recording, communication and everything else over the past hundred or so years. I bet these things were really something to hear when they first came out.

When I was about six or eight years old, I found a player and some cylinders that played in the attic at my grandparents' house. After we listened to the recordings, my grandmother put the player and cylinders away; and I never saw it again. That was in the late 40s or early 50s.
