Subscriber, what an excellent write up.
I find it hard to believe there is a 3-10dB difference between sizes or diameters, which is the specific reason I created this thread - hoping someone knows the answer.
I'm looking to purchase a moderator for my first PCP and zeroed in on a 0dB models. The gun will be a .22 caliber. I'm not sure of the model yet, but assume one that can reach up to 30 FPE.In the 0dB models, they have the 110C and 160S sizes. What is the overall sound dampening difference between these? Likewise, I've been told it might be a good idea to get one size up to eliminate a chance of clipping. So .25 instead of .22. Same question- how much of a difference does this make?Has anyone done a comparison? If there was little difference, I would opt for the shorter one in .25-Robert
Just the weight of a moderator hanging off the muzzle is going to cause a droop that makes the air rifle shoot lower. Superimposed on that is the change in barrel harmonics, that can tighten, open or shift groups; up, down or sideways. If the internal passage has long parallel walls that are too close to the projectile that can also cause aerodynamic steering. That can be identifies because boring it out removes the displacement in the group. Clipping will also be relieved by boring out, but clipping tends no to produce tight groups. A boring out that tightens groups and shifts them probably has clipping involved. So, many factors all superimposed.
