BSA Airsporter is JUNK!!

Got an Aorsporter Mk 5 a few months ago. Shot it quite a bit. Made avg 510 FPS with 14.44 grain pellets.
Tuned it a few times with different springs and piston seals etc. Never made any better power though. Didn’t mind that too much though because it was kinda fun to shoot.
Now the loading port just seized. Was working perfectly, opened it to load a pellet and it just locked open. Ended up smashing it out with a hammer and a punch. What a POS!!
I like to enjoy airgunning and won’t tolerate absolute &^^& like that. I’ll be giving these junk guns a wide berth going forward.
Does this happen often on these types of guns? If so, why would anyone ever buy one?
PS, I have a very nice non functioning BSA Airsporter Mkv parts gun if anyone wants one.

I'm not an expert on the Airsporter, but a loading tap is a pretty simple thing. It's hard to imagine what is inherent to it, that would cause such a sudden failure.
But taps are fit extremely closely to seal the breech of course. Did you look carefully to see if something might be jamming it?
I once had a very similar problem with a Hammerli Master, a CO2 target pistol with a pop-up tap. I'd been resting the gun on a carpet pad between shots, and the culprit turned out to be a single fine fiber from the carpet - so small I could hardly see it.

Don't know where the Airsporter Mk.5 belongs, age-wise, but after reading Tom G.'s report on the BSA Meteor Mk.4, it was clear I would never ever buy a late BSA - worse than low-end Chinese guns. When BSA went bust, it went bust for a reason.

There was nothing in the breech. I opened it, loaded a pellet, and that was it. It was stuck there. I have a new breech coming from John Nibbs. I’ll see if I can fix it. Other than that, I actually like the rifle. Don’t have much faith in it though if it tends to malfunction like that. Oh well, on to other things..

Arland: Sounds good, but keep us posted. I've never heard of such a malfunction in any tap-loader, so a diagnosis of what happened would be interesting!
Ilimakko: I am no BSA expert, but Airsporter vs. Meteor might be apples-to-oranges. The Airsporters I've handled were all built and finished to a good standard - some better than others, but never
bad
. The Meteor did see some rough periods though (IIRC, even sold with the action painted for a time).
