Not quite a “stubby” 2240

Inspired by bantam5s’ stubby build, figured I assemble some of the misc crosman parts on hand.
turned out my 2240 hpa adapter was an early (pre HiPac) unit by DAQ. Shorter than the HiPac but 1/2 inch longer that the standard 2240 barrel. Had a 9 inch piece of factory .22 barrel so got to work fitting that to a crosman steel breech.
didn’t like the look of the long breech so removed an inch & added a 2nd barrel set screw.
the barrel band now can sit right at the front of of the grip frame. a little time with the dremil & the 2250 fore grip was on.
trigger parts were a cleaned & shimmed up, a 22lr case was cut to top the spring & a stop screw was added.
valve was tapped to use a disco screw, exhaust was angled & poppet was ground to help flow along with a poly TP. hoping for a fair balance between shot count & power.
at 2-/12lbs it is only 8 ounces more than my 1377

at 1500psi pistol is good for 10 shots, 14.3gr CPs just over 500fps, just under 9 FPE. that’s only 12-13 strokes with hand pump to refill.
best target so far with 14 gr wad cutters, crosman premiers 14.3 only slightly worse. DAQ adapter gives a nice forward weight to help steady the shot.
Had everything to assemble this pistol on hand. thanks for the inspiration GTA!

I really like this build. But I cannot stop missing it. Trying to get it just right. More power? Better accuracy? Trying find the balance.
So over the last week I got to looking at some other parts in the bin & found a valve cap the seemed different, bored deeper, about 1/8-3/16”? what a difference that 1 change made. Power jumped big time. 14.3s were well over 600fps & 12FPE but “LOUD” & almost unwieldy + shot count was down to 6 with a huge spread!
So back to the parts bin & a lot more reading in the archives. I changed out the poly TP back to stock & played with the power adjuster & here are the results …
1650 psi … 14.3gr CP … 8 shots 541.4, 540.4, 545.2, 543.6, 548.7, 548.0, 545.6, 539.4 … avg 544, SD 3.45, ES 9.3, 9.4FPE
thought it was a fluke so
same test but 15.89 JSB … 523.7, 519.9, 526.3, 524.5, 527.2, 526.9, 523.8, 519.5 … avg 524, SD 2.96, ES 7.7, 9.69FPE
Accuracy, control & noise lvl are back to what I consider acceptable … Please make me stop! can it get any better?

That's a great build!
I just may try to figure out how to build one myself. I was thinking of doing a 1322 rifle build but this has really got my attention. Great job!

Be forewarned … it’s addictive. Keep a notebook handy to document the results of each change made.
After shooting it recently I realized the OEM trigger is just too narrow, even though it is very nice after reworking the factory components. Also the factory bolt has to go. So I’ve got some upgrades on order.
I really like the LPA rear sight but am also thinking about a small dot sight too.

I have a few questions on your build...
Are you using the OEM 2240 tube?
Do you know the max safe fill pressure?
I've found bulk fill adapters (for regulated bottles) and a screw in adapter that would work (I think). I'd like to build one but need to keep the "excitement" to a minimum. I'd hate to vent 1,200psi+ in my hands too quickly
Would using something like a Disco/Maxi tube "adapter assembly" (the screw in tube piece with fill nipple) be ok to use? I was recently introduced to Magnum Air Power who has/makes all kinds of goodies... Though I know there's other vendors.
Oh, and I'm already hooked just looking at custom builds. I'd like to have a pcp pistol to make my own, but has to be handy. Your build is what I've wanted as plinking/pesting pistol. Very cool!

Yes, I am using a Crosman 2240 tube but I would not recommend direct pressure in the OEM 2240 tube.
Safe fill pressure is dependent on a number of factors. My valve retention screw is heavier than OEM & the valve does not move even a little with just that mod. But I also run a 6/32 breech screw & the valve butts right tight to that also.
In 2014 I did use a 2400kt tube for my 1rst HPA build using Disco components & pinned the valve. I experimented a lot with that build & ran pressures as high as 2100psi but was never really comfortable going over 2k so finally found a tune starting at 1500psi that produced good power & decent shot count. Attached a pic as it is still a favorite of mine.
If I do another I will have the tube drilled to use all 3 valve retention screws or purchase a Cothran tube good for 3k

Very cool stuff.
Yeah, what I found would use the 2240 tube as a pressure vessel. I'll have to read up further into HPA builds for the 2240. Waiting on parts for my Maximus and plan on fixing up my 1377 & 1322 this fall/winter. Just ordered a Umarex Strike Point to compare to the 1322. Before I get swamped in projects I need to knock a few out. Hopefully in spring I can share a 2240 build
Thanks for the information and sharing your project.
