I don't get the obsession and exageration with springer noise. I've got a bunch of Weihrauchs and the only one that is actually loud is my R1. It's a carbine barrel 20 cal and it almost sounds like a 22lr. And no it's not detonating or dieseling. This gun is a freak, my 20 cal Rx1 was making 5 fpe more and it was quieter than this R1. The rest of my springers may seem somewhat loud to the shooter (particularly indoors) but stand fifteen feet to the side and front of the barrel and they sound like a staple gun. To the neighbors the target strikes sound louder than the guns themselves.Maybe there's some springers I'm not familiar with, that can benefit from moderators but not mine. I tried a Weihrauch slip on moderator on my Hw30s and Hw50s and the difference in report wasn't worth the goofy look of a moderator on a full length barrel. It sits nearly new on a shelf. Also the mechanical noise perceived by the shooter can be greatly reduced with a good tune. But it won't be completely eliminated. I will say that shooting my springers outdoors sounds completely different to me than when I'm shooting them in my basement. In the basement it's a different sound and it's louder to me.

I will say that shooting my springers outdoors sounds completely different to me than when I'm shooting them in my basement. In the basement it's a different sound and it's louder to me.All my 6 PCPs (shrouded and with an LDC) are much more quiet than any of the 8 springers I have owned.I live in a place where I cannot shoot loud airguns and springers are loud, no way around it.
I used a Downloadable app to test the report of various airguns. I know they aren't precise, but gives an idea of how loud various types of guns are for comparison. I did notice that the app and phone used for the test may very well be off at the higher sound readings. (And ALL readings )The guns tested were a Benjamin Ironhide NP2 w/ factory shroud, a Ruger Blackhawk springer w/ldc (factory internals w/lube tune), Crosman Legacy 1000 pumper, a Crosman Summit Ranger NP2 and a Crosman Shockwave NP(homemade carbine, 9" barrel). All .177 for comparison. Both the Benjamin Ironhide and Ruger Blackhawk have basically no muzzle report. The sound is from mechanical noise, as the shroud and ldc help with the report. When shot near or towards (but not at) a building/wall or structure there's no muzzle report echo. The sound meter recorded 74-75 db's for these guns. The Crosman Summit Ranger has no shroud, it has a longer barrel with open sights. There is a slight muzzle report when shot near or towards a building/wall/structure. The meter app recorded 76-77 db's with this gun.The Legacy 1000 pumper definitely has a sharper muzzle report. There's little mechanical noise when shot, sound app recorded 77-78 db's.Lastly the Crosman Shockwave "carbine". This is by far my loudest breakbarrel. It has a full power gas ram, but due to the short barrel only produces 12-13fpe. It sounds like a subsonic rimfire being shot. The report is sharp and loud enough to ring your ears a bit if shot near a wall or inside a structure, though the app only registered 80-81 db's. Shrouds and moderators do help with springers and gas rams. The shorter the barrel the more they help. With pcp's, pumpers and CO2 guns they help a bunch, unless tuned down a lot. Most of you already know these things, but just wanted to test. I know with spring/gas piston guns are quiet for the most part when there's distance from the shooter. But when using other types of airguns with out a shroud or moderator it may raise some eyebrows. This test would be better if I had data from muzzle and down range, instead of hearing an echo of the report. If anyone has anything to add please do. Would be interested in hearing if there's advice on reducing mechanical noise if possible. And also curious as to what quiet guns others have. I didn't try any pcp's, but have a few that are very quiet.
