I got my printer... and a headache!
« on: August 06, 2022, 12:13:49 AM »
I received my 3D printer yesterday and now I'm watching YT videos - the reason I've got the headache ???
I think what I need now is an inexpensive computer dedicated to 3D printing and a few kilos of filament. I want to try the wood filament and since the printer heads are not expensive ( https://www.anycubic.com/collections/for-vyper/products/hotend-for-vyper ) I wanted to have one dedicated to it.
It seems like 3D printing would be fun and challenging at the same time so here we go....

The first question (of many to come) is about filament. Is there a particular brand you gents use?
I am asking because after looking and reading reviews on the "zon" site and looking at myriad brands, I am thoroughly confused.

Amazon reviews need a lot of salt to take while reading them.

Thank you Matt and Travis, you guys are great!
I decided for the near future to use Cura for slicing and use the .stl free files, CAD modeling to follow.

So when you get around to it just tell cura what printer you have. If you cant figure it out Ill help. Once that is set then tell it what material you are using PETG PLA ABS etc and let it figure it out. Once that is done and a test print is done well Im sure you will be satisficed with the results. Once you feel comfortable to mess with settings then we will get into that and really its based on what is wrong not what can be improved at first. I see a problem I fix ONLY that problem then move on once I am happy with the result. That sounds really daunting but its not. I learned everything on my own I did all the research watching the vids reading the forums etc I never had anyone to talk to directly. So it took me years and hundreds of failed prints to gain what I know and you know what I still dont see my self as a master.

I said it before and it bears repeating, you guys are aces!
This far I installed Cura 5.1, selected the printer, selected the filament, loaded the 3DBenchy boat .stl file and "sliced" it. All I need now is the time to unbox the printer and set it up, waiting for a flash drive so I can store my files on and then time to actually print the file.

You do not need a flash drive it comes with this. It has EVERYTHING you need to get started. Its a 8 gig SD card you have no idea the files you can store on it. All you need to do is open the box run in 7 screws and plug some connectors in. If you have 1 hour you will be assembled leveled sliced loaded and printing. I think it took me 30 minuets from open box to print. I understand from your perspective that seems way out of your ability but I assure you its not.

That sounds really good but I was reminded of one tiny, little detail: a work space where the printer can be undisturbed and have good ventilation. My wife can sniff a cup of coffee a mile away.... plastics and such, forget about it!

I'd suggest starting with PLA, it seemed to me to be the most forgiving if settings aren't quite right.  I was able to get on fine with the cheapest stuff I could find.  I've liked Amazon/Overture and Micro Center's Inland brands.  PLA almost smells good -- like candycorn sort of...

Speaking of headaches---

I also have a warning
.  I presume this is a printer with a PTFE tube for feeding the filament?  When that tube gets hot, and it will on most printers since it goes right to the printhead, the tubing can put out gas that is toxic to birds.  None too good for any living thing really.  But birds are the most affected, so please do some reading about it, especially if you have birds/pets in the house.  It's only a BIG problem at higher temperatures, but you really don't want to kill Polly accidentally.

Bob, thank you for the advice. We don't have any indoor pets but for safety's sake I am looking for an area in the already overcrowded garage.

My 2 cents on the wood filaments... DO NOT try them. Bypass PLA, go straight to PETG. Overture PETG is available on Amazon for a great price. PETG requires no parts cooling... so that takes one issue out of the equation.
I have tried most exotic filaments and the "wood" options are just bad. Get something tried and true to work before you try anything offbeat.
Printing PETG with a .06mm nozzle is like using training wheels and the end result is fantastic. PLA is brittle and coarse. I have printed maybe 30 spools of PLA in the last 5 years and I can say PETG  ( the G is for glycol ), prints so much smoother. Getting it to stick was slightly trickier than PLA but that is the only downside I can think of. The PETG prints slick and a bit glossy. It is delightful, I haven't touched PLA in 2 years except the spool of glow in the dark PLA I have because it's cool !
I keep missing you in the CHAT Brew.. I wasn't aware you had bit the bullet and got a printer. PM when you get a minute !
I reread this whole thread and didn't see what printer you bought. I have these cheap Ender3 Pros and they are both set up very similar. I did print the direct drive mod for both and it really was a game changer. I want EVERYONE to get into 3D printing... it really is amazing. I can print you the entire direct drive assembly if you like Brew, Swapping it out is cake except one thing... you need to extend the extruder wiring by about 8 inches. It is very easy but it does require some surgery. The only bowden tube on my printers is about a 1 inch piece that couples the hot end to the extruder. Let me know if you are interested.

Nice... the ones from that post a bit ago ? That seemed like a really good deal. I wanted to snatch one up to have another brand to play with. I placed an order for an Elegoo Saturn S but ended up canceling it immediately after. I figured 500 dollars would be better spent on other things. I will get a resin printer soon though.

I ordered on the 1st and received it on the 4th. Then put the box aside and started looking at .stl files. Mom started to feel crappy so everything went on the back burner.
